Urban Forestry's mission is to manage and ensure Portland's urban forest infrastructure for current and future generations. This includes street trees, park trees, and some private property trees.

Do you have experience in urban forestry? Are you able to manage tree inventory and forest assessment in support of a healthy forest? If so, you may be the Botanic Specialist II - Forestry specialist that we are looking for!


Portland Parks & Recreation is recruiting for a Botanic Specialist II - Forestry specialist that will have responsibility for managing and assessing tree programs in support of a healthy, growing urban forest.
The position may be responsible for tree inventory, forest assessment, pest and pathogen management, policy analysis, planting programs, planning, and permit reporting. Much of this position's work is project based and changes with the current needs of the division.
The position requires strong data management and analysis skills, as well as an understanding of best practices in urban forestry. The Botanic Specialist II writes and edits reports, gives presentations, and must be able to communicate verbally and in writing to a variety of audiences. This is a lead staff position, and the position coordinates the work of contractors, staff, and volunteers.
The Botanic Specialist II also collaborates closely with the community and participates regionally on urban forestry technical issues. In addition to this position, this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies for Botanic Specialist II - Forestry.

Inventory Season is Here!

The return of summer brings the return of the Tree Inventory Project. This summer, we will be measuring trees in 17 parks across Portland.

The Tree Inventory Project is looking for volunteers for workdays throughout the summer. Volunteers will build tree identification skills, learn hands-on forestry surveying techniques, and meet fellow tree huggers. No experience necessary! A trained team leader will teach you everything you need to know.

You will see tree climbers challenging themselves and displaying their skills as they climb 70 feet up into the trees of Irving Park. The Pacific Northwest Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture will host this fun filled day that the entire family can enjoy. The Seasonal Maintenance Worker - Tree Establisher works in parks, rights-of-way, and at schools to ensure that newly planted trees have the best chance at survival.
Urban Forestry is now hiring a Seasonal Maintenance Worker - Tree Establisher to assist our Urban Forestry Operations Department. The position will be responsible for visiting up to 120 trees weekly to provide them with essential water, mulch, and occasional pruning.
Ability to drive or willingness to learn to drive a large flatbed pickup truck is required. Training for all duties of the position will be provided. A valid driver's license is required. Hiring is contingent upon a criminal background check, 5-year driving record review, and physical aptitude test.
The start date is as soon as possible and will continue through the middle of October. Urban Forestry is willing to work around the right applicant's schedule regarding start or end date, within reason.
