2022-2023 Housing Process | Residency Exemptions
Hi there,
As you look ahead to next week, we know that the opportunity to request a residency exemption for the 2022-2023 academic year may be on your mind. As a reminder, on Tuesday, Feb. 1, we announced the 2022-2023 housing process, which included details about exemptions to our three-year residency requirement.
In advance of the start of the residency exemption process, we share these additional details with our rising 3rd- and 2nd-year students. Reminder: residency exemptions permit a student to live off-campus for the 2022-2023 academic year.
The rising 3rd- and 2nd-year exemption period will be open from Monday, Feb. 7 at 10 am EST to Thursday, Feb. 10 at 10 am EST. Please remember that once the deadline passes, we will not approve any further exemption requests.
All residency requests must be made via your Campus Living eServices portal.
Rising 3rd-Year Students (Class of 2024)
If you are a rising 3rd-year student, you are eligible to request a residency exemption beginning Monday, Feb. 7 at 10 am EST. While documentation is not required as part of your exemption request, you are required to submit an exemption request in order to be eligible to live off-campus next year.
All rising 3rd-year students who submit an exemption request by Thursday, Feb. 10 at 10 am EST will have their exemption granted. No exemption requests will be accepted after the deadline.
We encourage you to take your time to consider your 2022-2023 housing interests, particularly the desire to live off-campus versus on-campus next year. Though the exemption period is around 3 days long, there is no advantage to submitting your request early. We want you to feel confident in your decision to request an exemption. There are two important situations we want you to keep in mind:
  • If you don’t request an exemption before the deadline:
Exemption requests must be made before the Feb. 10 at 10 am EST deadline. If you don’t request an exemption before the deadline, you will be required to live on-campus next year. You will apply for on-campus housing through a subsequent part of the 2022-2023 housing process, such as Room Renewal or the 3rd- and 2nd-year application period, and be assigned a room for next year.
  • If you receive an exemption then change your mind  because you want to live on-campus next year:
As we guarantee housing for all 3rd-year students, you are welcome to change your mind after receiving a 3rd-year residency exemption. However, if you rescind your approved exemption, you WILL NOT BE eligible to apply for housing until the last phase of the 2022-2023 housing process is completed, which is scheduled for late April.
Rising 2rd-Year Students (Class of 2025)
If you are a rising 2nd-year student, you have the opportunity to apply for a 2nd-year residency exemption beginning Monday, Feb. 7 at 10 am EST.
On Thursday, Feb. 10 at 10 am EST, the residency exemption form will close and no requests will be accepted after the deadline.
Pursuant to GW’s compliance with our Campus Plan, we accept 2nd-year exemption requests only if they meet one of seven permitted criteria. Corresponding documentation is required for all 2nd-year exemption request applications.
Please know that we accept very few rising 2nd-year exemption requests. If your 2nd-year exemption request is denied, you will apply for housing through a subsequent part of the 2022-2023 housing process, such as Room Renewal or the 3rd- and 2nd-year application period, and be assigned a room for next year.
We encourage you to learn more about our residency requirements and exemptions. We’ve included a few Frequently Asked Questions that may answer your questions before you ever need to contact us directly.
