Do you have questions about making your course materials digitally accessible, want help identifying next steps, or are you seeking supported co-working time? Join TEP, UO Online, and Information Services Thursdays anytime between 1-3 p.m. on Zoom.
The University Senate, in partnership with the Division of Global Engagement, Office of General Counsel, and the UO Police Department, is hosting an informational forum on how to stay safe and maintain academic operations in the face of potential federal immigration enforcement on campus.
The session will take place from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in Chiles 128 & on Microsoft Teams (must register with UO email to access Microsoft Teams link).
Faculty members will receive an email from Gallup on Feb. 23 with a link to an engagement survey. The survey is grounded in Gallup’s established research on what helps people feel supported and productive in the work environment, including at over 40 R1 institutions. Nominations for the annual sustainability award for teaching excellence are open until noon on March 4. Consider nominating a colleague who teaches about the environment, climate, and social resilience or environmental, social or economic sustainability. Self-nominations also are accepted. Please include the faculty member’s name, an applicable course syllabus, and a one-page letter of support that addresses the evaluation criteria in your submission to the Teaching Engagement Program.
Today is the deadline for nominations for Williams Fellowships and proposals for Williams Instructional Grants. The Williams Fund supports excellence and innovation in undergraduate education.

"The exponential rise in the luminosity of this source is unprecedented. It's now about 50 times brighter than when it was first discovered, and is now incredibly bright for an object in radio waves. This has been going on for years now, and no sign of stopping. That is super unusual," said University of Oregon astrophysicist Yvette Cendes, lead author of the study published on Thursday in the Astrophysical Journal.

| ACCESSIBILITY TIP OF THE MONTH

Images & Alternative Text
Images can enhance learning by illustrating complex concepts and providing examples. To ensure accessibility, always include clear, concise alternative text (alt text) for images so students using screen readers can understand the content. Alt text should describe the image’s purpose, avoid unnecessary detail, and skip phrases like “image of.” Thoughtful visuals paired with meaningful alt text create inclusive content for all learners.
In Canvas:
- Insert Image: Use the Rich Content Editor to upload or embed your image.
- Add Alt Text: Enter a clear description in the Alt Text field or mark as decorative. “Decorative” images are those that convey no instructional content such as banner images, page dividers, or background images.
- Edit Anytime: Click the image and choose Image Options to update alt text.
