This year’s 7th annual TEDx NYUShanghai conference, with the theme of “Unfolding Apex,” featured inspiring talks by industry leaders on pushing limits, getting outside your comfort zone, and reaching for the stars. This was the first TEDx NYUShanghai conference to be open to the general public as well as the campus community.

The Center for Student Belonging has launched a film series, VisionCine: Exploring Diversity Through Film, to encourage conversation on diversity-related topics. The program hosts monthly film screenings, followed by guided discussions to encouraging reflection on social justice issues, equity, and inclusion.

• Congratulations to IMA student Chanel (Shuya) Feng ’26, whose digital work The Default, exploring the POV of a machine learning model, is featured in the “Man vs Machine” exhibition at the US Consulate’s SPACE 33 gallery. Feng has also been invited to join a discussion as part of the reception for Undersecretary of Commerce Kathi Vidal’s visit to Shanghai.

• Forging connections: NYU Shanghai graduate alumni and students from 10 graduate programs welcomed their Duke Kunshan University counterparts to NYU Shanghai’s campus for interdisciplinary conversations on April 14. NYU Shanghai Dean of Graduate and Advanced Education Eric Mao warmly welcomed Dr. Xin Li, associate vice-chancellor for Graduate Studies and Research at Duke Kunshan University and discussed future collaboration.

• On April 15, the Center for Global Health Equity and the NYU School of Global Public Health co-hosted the Inaugural Summit in Global Public Health. The hybrid summit addressed urban health and climate change, and broader global health issues including migrant health, biostatistical approaches, tobacco control, and digital mental health. Key takeaways included conversations surrounding decolonial approaches in global public health and centering learners in our work. Brian J. Hall, director of the Center for Global Health Equity, emphasized the desire to “make this an annual meeting, broadening educational, research, and practice engagement between campuses.”

• Students from all three of NYU’s global campuses shared their language-learning experiences at the Learning a Foreign Language Across the NYU Global Networks panel, moderated by Chinese Language Program Director Zou Xin. Five NYU Abu Dhabi faculty from the French Language and Literature, Arabic, and Writing Programs also joined the 2nd Language Matters Symposium held April 18 and 19. They engaged with the NYU Shanghai community through class visits, student panel discussions, a faculty roundtable, and networked with the World Languages, English for Academic Purposes, Writing, and Chinese Language programs.

A new study by NYU Silver School of Social Work Professor Wen-Jui Han says “about three-quarters of the work patterns we observed did not strictly conform to working stably during daytime hours throughout our working years.
