BYM Office Closed, Aug 16-22 |
After a wonderful, busy summer season serving more than 900 children and adult Friends across all programs, the BYM Office will be closed next week, August 16-22. Thank you to the dozen of volunteers who helped make BYM Camps and Annual Session a success! There will be no Weekly Announcements next Friday. During this Annual Sabbath Week, staff will not be answering their phones or emails. GenSec@bym-rsf.org will be monitored during the staff Sabbath Week, and the General Secretary will receive emergency calls on behalf of all staff. Otherwise, staff will return to their desks on Monday, Aug 24th. Thank you for your care as our staff take a week off after several months of long days (and nights and weekends!)

The BYM "program year" begins and ends with Annual Session. At the conclusion of Annual Session, we publish a calendar of key dates for the upcoming year. The 2026-2027 Calendar of Key Dates is now available. The calendar includes: all Interim Meeting dates (and deadlines for submitting business items), Annual Session 2027 dates (it's one week earlier next year), annual data requests of monthly meetings, youth conferences, retreats, and more!

Committee Handbook for New Program Year |
Each year, BYM publishes a Committee Handbook full of information for BYM Committees and Working Groups. The Handbook includes information on: budgets and requesting payments/reimbursements, resources available from the office, what committees might work on month-by-month, deadlines for submitting business agenda items and supporting documents, and more!

Grief Group, Aug 19 @ 7pm |
The Ministry and Pastoral Care Committee offers a monthly online Grief Support Group, which will meet again on Wed, Aug 19 at 7:00pm online. The group is open to anyone bereaved, of a parent, spouse/partner, child, friend, colleague, pet, etc. The group is led by Ann Riggs, Sandy Spring Meeting, a chaplain at Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center in Columbia, Maryland. War & Militarism Working Group Offers Resources to Meetings |
A letter from the BYM War and Militarism Working Group offering resources has been sent by postal mail to monthly meetings. The War and Militarism Working Group of BYM wishes to inspire Friends in monthly meetings to seek actions to reduce the risk of nuclear war. The Working Group offers to visit your Meeting and give a “second hour” session entitled “Nuclear Arms Control at a Crossroads: What can we do?” If your Meeting would like to schedule such a session, contact information for the Co-Clerks of the Working Group can be found in their letter.

Annual Session Recordings Available Online |
Zoom Recordings from BYM Annual Sessions are now available online. The Opening Plenary by Evan Welkin, FWCC and Carey Lecture by Valerie Brown are both available along with the Workshop offered by the 339 Manumissions Project.

SAYMA Racial Transformation Cohort Registration Extended to Aug 15 |
Southern Appalachian Yearly Meeting (SAYMA) invites BYM Friends to participate in Cohort 4 of the SAYMA Racial Conflict Transformation Program, starting in September. The Program includes monthly small group calls and a 3-part training in practical tools for addressing racial conflict. Adult Quakers from all Yearly Meetings are invited to register for this online opportunity. Registration ends tomorrow, Aug 15!

Remembering Liz Hofmeister |
Liz Hofmeister (Bethesda) passed away on May 28, 2026. BYM Friends are warmly invited to a Memorial Meeting for Liz at the Bethesda Friends Meeting House, Sun, Sep, 6 at 2 pm. Liz was active in her Monthly and our Yearly Meeting for more than 40 years, serving on nearly every BYM Committee, including Peace and Social Concerns, Ministry and Pastoral Care, Supervisory, Development, and the ad hoc Committee on Visiting Ministers.

Save the Date: Fall Work Days at BYM Quaker Camps |
We will be hosting Workdays at each of the camps this fall. We will have a great time together and get some work done while we are at it. Join us for the fun! We will get started around 9:30 am and work together until around 4 pm. We will share a potluck lunch. Beverages and sandwich-making provided. Please dress for the weather and wear heavy-soled shoes, jeans and protective eye wear. Friends under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Goose Creek to Host Indigenous Film Screening, Sept 13 |
Good Creek Friends Meeting invites all Friends to a special film screening on Sunday, September 13, at 3 p.m. Goose Creek’s Anti-racism Committee will host a screening of “Cockacoeske’s Dilemma,” a Virginia Indigenous film produced by local nonprofit Saving the Circle. The film tells the history of tribal resistance, diplomacy, and resilience. The cast and crew included 15 Indigenous tribes, primarily from Virginia. The Executive Director of Saving the Circle will join for a discussion and refreshments after the film.

Call to join BYM Palestinian-Israeli Peace & Justice Working Group |
Doug Vaughn (Stony Run), Clerk of BYM Peace & Social Concerns Committee, writes to BYM Friends about BYM's Palestinian-Israeli Peace & Justice Working Group. Doug urges Friends interested in action against the devastating violence in Gaza and the ongoing struggle for a just and lasting peace. Friends can join the Working Group by emailing NajlaDrooby@gmail.com. The Working Group meets the second Wednesday of the month at 7pm EST via Zoom to support each other and share success stories.
