SANTA FE PREP UPPER SCHOOL MUSICAL
Santa Fe Prep is excited to present Curtains by Kander and Ebb, the creative team who brought you Chicago and Cabaret. Curtains debuted on Broadway in 2007 and ran for many years. You won't want to miss this old school musical, a whodunnit mystery set in the brassy, bright, and promising year of 1959. Boston’s Colonial Theatre is host to the opening night performance of a new musical, and when the leading lady mysteriously dies on stage, the entire cast and crew are suspects. Enter a local detective, who just happens to be a musical theatre fan!
The show opens on February 23 at 7:00 pm, with performances on Saturday, February 24 at 7:00 pm and Sunday, February 25 at 2:00 pm.
WINTER WONDER DAYS
Winter Wonder Days this year was challenged by the lack of snow, but with full hearts and good attitudes, the Middle School ventured forth and had a great time anyway. The skiers and snowboarders have become very familiar with the runs that are open, and while the snowshoers have only been out on one actual snowshoeing trip, they have participated in some fabulous hikes. It is such a joy to see kids outdoors, finding their physical limits and getting to know each other in a different context.

SPEECH & DEBATE TOURNAMENT
The Santa Fe Prep Speech & Debate Team is hosting the inaugural Griffin Growl Debate Invitational this Saturday, February 10 and could use your help! In fact, the success of this tournament will rely heavily on the involvement and support of the Prep community. Here are the things we need most:

1. JUDGES. So very often, the tournaments we attend are delayed or otherwise derailed because there aren't enough judges in each round. If we do nothing else in our own tournament, I want to be absolutely flooded with judges. You do not need to have experience to judge. Certainly, there are judge roles that do require experience, and we will be sending our most experienced people into those roles, but there are also many judge slots where all you need is to be able to listen carefully with impartiality and articulate a meaningful response and constructive criticism.

You also do not need to volunteer all day. We have a schedule broken up into one hour and 45 minute rounds, and you are encouraged to volunteer only for one—or maybe two—of these rounds. Spanish teacher and frequent judge Jes Ryan says, "It becomes addictive!" So yes, it really can be super interesting and a lot of fun!

To volunteer, email Coach Ambrose, give him a call at 505.920.2350, or simply sign up here: Griffin Growl.

2. FOOD. We will need to provide food and drink all day in the Judge/Coach Lounge. Normally this is a potluck arrangement, which is totally fine. If you would like to volunteer to help with providing food or drink, contact Ambrose.

Thank you for your consideration! I have truly come to believe that Speech and Debate plays a critical and vital role in the lives of the students who participate, as it builds skills and confidence that they carry with them for the rest of their lives. We are really excited to host our own tournament, and your support means a great deal.

                 MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS
Lisa Nordstrum's New Mexico History classes visited the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art last week. Students were given a tour and studied the current exhibit, "Time Travelers: and the Saints go Marching on," where they compared art from the past and present.
NM History students also enjoyed a visit from Nambe local and Spanish Market first-place Tin Artwork winner Cleo Romero this week. Cleo taught students how to create a traditional tin candle holder of her own design. It is Cleo’s own design and a popular project amongst middle schoolers.
Students in Sarah Stark's 7th grade English class recently studied cartoonist Gene Luen Yang's "American Born Chinese" and, in turn, cultivated their hands and creative minds at writing and illustrating their own graphic memoir in a 16 panel storyboard with the help of local graphic novel expert and designer Bram Meehan.
ATHLETIC NEWS
What a great weekend in Los Alamos for the Swim & Dive team! We competed like Griffins and represented our school with pride. Overall, the Girls placed 2nd, and the Boys placed 4th, just 40 points behind Santa Fe High. Next stop: State! Go Blue Griffins!!

The Varsity Basketball teams are in the thick of the district season. The Girls host McCurdy this evening, Tuesday, February 6 at 5:30 pm and the Boys will host them Wednesday, February 7 at 6:30 pm. Both teams have proven to be competitive in this year's district race: the Girls are still chasing their elusive first win and get closer at every outing; and the Boys have a chance to take a stranglehold on first place midway through the district competition if they can beat the Bobcats.

The Boys Middle School Basketball teams continue their push through the APIAL season with a game this Wednesday, February 7 at 5:00 pm against St. Theresa in Albuquerque

Spring sports have begun practices in earnest. The Lacrosse teams will get things rolling with an upcoming preseason tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada.

TAP PROJECTS
Ever wonder where encyclopedias go when they are outdated and no longer in use??
The Library staff and the 7th grade Recycling TAP teams pondered this question for a while before they came up with the idea to re-make these tomes into something practical for the librarytables!

Students measured and re-measured to get the sides of the table even, as the encyclopedias are not all the same width. Then, with an idea in mind, the group turned to Steve Machen, former Head of School and woodworker extraordinaire, to help with the execution of the table. Mr. Machen figured a way to secure the books in place and then made a beautiful encasement to hold them. This piece is certainly made to last and has given these books a second life, so to speak. Thank you Steve!
A fun upcoming benefit at Rio Chama Restaurant for the Santa Fe Prom Closet TAP! The Prom Closet collects and purchases dresses, party attire, suits, accessories, and shoes to give to juniors and seniors in Northern New Mexico each spring. For more information and to purchase tickets in advance, contact Rennae Ross at 505.795.7522.

GRIFFIN
SHOUT OUTS
On Saturday, January 27, a group of over 20 young people and their parents gathered for 100 Kids Who Care, an event conceptualized and organized by Coco Randolph '21 and inspired by local organization 100 Women Who Care. Young participants and their parents heard from four local non-profits doing service work in diverse areas of Santa Fe and voted on who should be awarded the money raised by participating in the event. The group that garnered the most votes was Reading is Magic, a program of Reading Quest, a non-profit whose mission is to support literacy for the children of Santa Fe. Presenters included a Reading is Magic tutor and her tutee, whose life has been changed through the work they have done together. Reading is Magic received almost $300 in one hour.

Congratulations to Coco on her generous leadership! Her broad and thoughtful vision encourages young people to learn about current issues of need in this city, to meet progressive organizations who are doing remarkable work, and to become voices of change.

The next events will be held on February 24, March 24, and April 21, 2:00 - 3:00 pm at Studio Center (formerly Warehouse 21).

Join us in celebrating Coach Tove Shere's recent success as a 5 time Cyclocross Champion! Congratulations, Tove!
PARENT
EDUCATION
Finding Calm: Parenting Through The Adolescent Years is the latest in a series of talks John Evaldson MD has given at Prep over the last 28 years. Board-certified Child, Adolescent, and Adult Psychiatrist in private practice, Dr. Evaldson is the father of Jack '09, Ryan '12, and Kyle '15 and was Prep's Middle School Basketball Coach for four seasons.

Hosted by the Santa Fe Prep Parent's Association, this talk is appropriate for parenting at any stage. We hope you will join us on Thursday, February 23 at 5:00 pm in the Founders' Room to  learn how the developing brain impacts your child's behavior and how you can use that to set and adjust your course as a parent over time.

Dr. Evaldson will offer a short presentation and an opportunity to ask questions. Light snacks provided.

HISTORY DEPARTMENT
NEWS
The Santa Fe Prep History Department and the Santa Fe Council on International Relations hosted a luncheon last week with George Washington University Professor Janet Steele and a mixed group of seniors and sophomores. Seniors are researching related topics in their elective on the Middle East, as are the tenth grade students in World History 2. Ms. Steele talked about the meandering nature of making a career through history and journalism, writing compelling narratives in academic writing, and more specifically, spoke about her research and writing on Islam and the media in Indonesia and Malaysia. Students had a chance to talk about their research projects with Professor Steele and ask her questions about her work. It was a great all-around experience and exchange of research and ideas.
Author and photojournalist Paola Gianturco visited Prep last month and talked about her latest book, Wonder Girls, which highlights how girls around the globe are fighting systems of oppression.  Her presentation focused on how girls in Tanzania are fighting for equal access to education and how girls in India challenge the caste system.  Gianturco asked students in the audience to work for change and get involved in issues in their community. Several Prep history classes, as well as delegations from Desert and the Master's program, attended her presentation in the auditorium. Thank you to Paola for taking the time to share her work and to History teacher Nick Wirth for organizing this event.
