Healthcare requires a new kind of leader – one that strives to create a supportive environment for their patients, colleagues, and broader healthcare team; one that promotes a culture of collaboration and wellbeing; and one that is empathic and compassionate.
The Lead With Compassion: Communication Skill-Building Workshop is a 2.5-day training in San Diego, CA, led by the Center for Compassionate Communication, that equips experienced and aspiring healthcare professionals with the tools to enhance their leadership performance in medical settings and beyond.
Lead With Compassion teaches you how to better connect with patients, peers, students, and more through an immersive arts and humanities-based curriculum. It rewires how health caregivers think about communication in medicine, and addresses the critical importance of intentional listening, meaningful interpersonal communication, and compassion-centered care – leading to better health and well-being outcomes for providers and patients alike. As a result of completing this workshop, participants will walk away feeling confident in their abilities to more effectively lead their healthcare teams.
Lead With Compassion is for you if you want to:
• Discover empathic and compassionate principles that can enhance your leadership performance
• Ignite stronger, more meaningful relationships with healthcare teams, patients, medical students, and more

Sanford Institute Attends AAMC's Learn, Serve, Lead 2024 Annual Meeting
|
This month, Dr. Lisa Eyler, Director of the Center for Empathy and Compassion Training in Medical Education, attended the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Learn, Serve, Lead 2024 Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA. The event featured thought-provoking plenary sessions, including a presentation by news correspondent Scott Pelley of CBS' 60 Minutes, as well as conversations with leaders in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and biomedical research. Dr. Eyler had the opportunity to network with fellow medical educators and attend workshops on topics including trauma-informed medical education, innovative ways to teach clinical skills, and community-engaged health education, among others. The UC San Diego School of Medicine delegation also had a chance to gather for a dinner meeting – and even showed off their own musical talents at karaoke in downtown Atlanta! "I am so excited to bring back all the great knowledge that I gained at Learn, Serve, Lead 2024 to inform our work at the Sanford Institute and the School of Medicine. I am also excited to foster new collaborations with people I met at the conference so that we can share our programs with other schools across the country," says Dr. Eyler.

| Sanford Institute Celebrates Genetic Counselor Awareness Day on November 14
|
Genetic Counselor Awareness Day is hosted in November each year. It is a day dedicated to raising awareness and interest around genetic counseling and building awareness around the important, supportive role genetic counseling can play in your healthcare team. Genetic counselors help patients understand their genetic health and navigate complex information about genetic testing. They are trained to review family histories, explain the chance of recurring genetic disorders in relatives, and explore genetic testing options. At the Sanford Institute, we are proud to recognize Taylor Berninger, MS, MA, MEd, CGC, of the Center for Empathy and Technology on Genetic Counselor Awareness Day. Taylor has 10+ years experience as a clinical genetic counselor, providing prenatal, cancer, cardiology, neurology, and general adult consultations. She received her Master's in genetic counseling from Northwestern University, and in addition to her work with the Sanford Institute, she serves as the San Diego-based Associate Director for the Augustana-Sanford Genetic Counseling Graduate Program. At UC San Diego Health, she provides patient consults for the Family Cancer Genetics Program. Thank you for all that you do, Taylor!
