Message from Natalie Berhumoglu
Recording Secretary, WRJ Northeast District Brave New World... Broadening my horizons has been an occupation of mine since the March stay-at-home order. I do get out in a limited way, but it is frustrating not to be able to meet friends easily or go to a museum or author event in a bookshop.
I’ve sought out informative and knowledge-enhancing webinars, virtual book discussion groups, teacher professional development, podcasts, YouTube videos, and other forms of intellectual stimulation. I’m afraid of my mind turning to mush. That’s my immediate motivation, but a more fulfilling motivation is to learn and gain understanding of unfamiliar issues, people, and ideas that I’ve encountered while watching the news. I think this is the way to maintain one’s sanity and also create an ever-growing list of topics for conversation with one’s spouse or partner.
Take this opportune moment to broaden your horizons! Deepen your computer skills, explore your neighborhood while listening to an audiobook, engage in local social action, seek out virtual events on WRJ’s website, find creative ways to keep your sisterhood connected and active, boldly meet with friends at a properly socially-distancing restaurant, take virtual museum and zoo tours, fearlessly dive into cooking a new exotic recipe with ingredients you’ve never tasted before.
There is still a bright, full-of-hope world out there, beckoning to you. You do not have to remove yourself from it merely because we are in this surreal otherworldly existence. Reach out, grab a beacon of hope, and connect again to our fellow humans.
I challenge you to construct a more enriched, enlightened you. And, in the spirit of the theme of our upcoming November District Convention, I urge you to “share your story” so that our sisters may become enriched and enlightened as well.

Incubator Grants Congratulations!
WRJ awarded Incubator Grants to the following sisterhoods in the Northeast District:
- Temple Shalom, Needham, MA, for supporting the local chapter of Days for Girls, an organization that provides reusable menstrual kits to girls in third world countries
- Temple B’nai Chaim, Georgetown, CT, for supporting laundry services for homeless and indigent people in the Danbury area
- Temple B’nai Torah, Wantagh, NY, for developing a vegetable garden to provide fresh produce to local food pantries and as a multigenerational community experience
WRJ Grant for District Dues We are pleased to announce that through the support of a generous grant, WRJ is reducing dues for affiliated sisterhoods in the amount of $2 per member, which is the amount of your district dues. This means sisterhoods now will only need to send a single dues payment of $18 for each sisterhood member, payable to WRJ and sent to the New York office. The previous $2/member fee paid to the District will now be waived; instead that amount will be sent to the Districts directly by WRJ. This is in recognition of the current unprecedented times we are living in, and a desire to keep as many members active in WRJ and the District as possible. We look forward to enjoying the 2020-2021 year with you!

Did you Know...
Rosh Hashanah liturgy
has inspired at least two rock songs Avinu Malkeinu, the prayer that means “Our Father, Our King,” inspired Mogwai, a Scottish post-rock-trio, to write a 20-minute epic song “My Father, My King.” The song, which borrows the prayer’s traditional melody, is alternately soft and beautiful and loud and raging. More famously, Leonard Cohen’s “Who By Fire” draws on the Unetanah Tokef, which many consider the most important prayer in the High Holiday liturgy.
