Two ULS Entrepreneurs Survive Baton Rouge Shark Tank

Two ULS student entrepreneurs recently pitched business ideas to a Shark Tank-like investor panel and successfully walked away with seed money to launch their projects.
As selected participants in the Young Entrepreneurs Academy of Baton Rouge (YEA BR), senior Zoe Patton and freshman Carson Manuel have spent the past six months working with mentors and taking classes under the direction of the LSU E. J. Ourso College of Business to generate a business idea tied to their interests; write a business plan and finally pitch to investors.
Patton's business, Ohana Hub, was created to be a nonprofit mentoring and tutoring organization catering to students in foster care. "Until recently, students in Louisiana aged out of foster care at age 18," said Patton, adding that many instantly became homeless. The goal of her nonprofit is to ensure that students in the foster care system have the educational backing and support needed to be able to finish high school and potentially go on to college. "My motto is 'No foster teen is left behind,'" she said. Patton earned $2,000 from the investors to launch her business.
Manuel's business pitch, Archiself, was for an app that allows users to customize a home by consulting with area architects based upon location. "I've always been interested in architecture," said Manuel, noting that after realizing the length of time it took for the construction of his family's home, he wanted to create something that could possibly make the process quicker. Manuel earned $500 for his pitch.
Next up, both entreprenerus will file their businesses with the Louisiana Secretary of State’s office and launch in the near future.

The Young Entrepreneurs Academy combines a proven national curriculum with the experiences of Baton Rouge business leaders, educators, community members, and entrepreneurs. Patton and Manuel were selected to participate this year along with 24 other students from a nine-parish area including Ascension, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Livingston, Pointe Coupee, St. Helena, West Baton Rouge and West Feliciana parishes.
