Remembering John Howard Moxley III, MD |
Former UC San Diego Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine Dr. John H. Moxley III passed away on January 15th, 2024 at the age of 89. Dr. Moxley was an instrumental figure in the inception of Moores Cancer Center, and served as a member of the Moores Cancer Center board from 1993 to 2002.

Mark your calendars for March 20 - 21 for a special seminar series featuring Dr. Shai Silberberg, Director of the Office of Research Quality at the NIH National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). Dr. Silberberg will be giving two presentations, "Assuring a Bright Future for Biomedical Research" on March 20 and "The P-Value Pretense and Other Common Statistical Pitfalls" on March 21. There will also be an opportunity to attend a Q&A session on March 21 prior to the talk.

AACR/ASCO Methods in Clinical Cancer Research Workshop |
The AACR/ASCO Methods in Clinical Cancer Research Workshop is an intensive workshop in the essentials of effective clinical trial designs of therapeutic interventions in the treatment of cancer for clinical fellow and junior faculty clinical researchers in all oncology subspecialties, including radiation, surgical oncology, and radiology. Applications are due by Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. ET.

UC Women’s Initiative Applications are Now Open! |
The UC Women’s Initiative for Professional Development (UC WI) is a unique, experiential, systemwide professional development program to support the success and advancement of mid-career, woman-identified professionals. UC San Diego Campus will have 12 spaces in total to fill for the 2024-2025 virtual cohorts, along with six alternates.

Surgical Oncologists As Scientists (SOAS) Training Program |
As a member of the next generation of translational surgeon-scientists, you will undergo rigorous training in three disciplines: 1) the tumor microenvironment; 2) techniques of biobanking; and 3) innovation and entrepreneurship. This is a truly unique, one of a kind training program, and is located at an elite institution with a Training Faculty composed of 18 NIH-funded ($28.1 million per year; $18.5 million in direct costs) Faculty Mentors. Applications must be submitted by April 15, 2024.

Cancer Therapeutics Training (CT2) Training Program |
The CT2 Program is open to both MDs and PhDs and provides an intensive 2-year period of research and training in the development of novel cancer therapeutics or diagnostics at the Moores Cancer Center. Trainees not only execute a research program under the direction of a member of the faculty of this Comprehensive Cancer Center, but also participate in coursework, seminars, and lectures. Graduates of the program are prepared to transition to leadership roles in cancer therapeutics development in either an academic or commercial environment. Applications must be submitted by April 15, 2024.

Equities Grants fund research that directly addresses cancer-related health disparities in underserved populations. Areas of opportunity include socio economic, cultural, geographic, racial, or ethnic bases of discrepancies with the objective to improve prevention, detection, and treatment of cancer in medically underserved communities. This may include projects aimed at improving access to quality cancer care via increasing participation in clinical trials and other healthcare service points or the development of novel interventions and therapies that utilize community clinics, home monitoring, and digital devices/phone check-ins to maximize accessibility.

As a part of our continued commitment to training, Lisa, Michelle and Kayleigh will start as Training and Education Specialists on 3/18. They will be responsible for developing role-specific trainings aimed at providing all staff with real-life insights directly from their Senior team members. Starting the last week of March, staff can expect training sessions to occur on a bi-weekly basis with all sessions recorded to be made available after the live training. If you are not able to attend these training sessions in person, please reach out to your direct supervisor .
- PI Research KPIs are in the process of implementation and faculty performance for Q1 will be reviewed starting late March / early April 2024. PI performance for clinical research activities will be rewarded with an incentive Z payment. If you are a PI and do not have a discretionary account set-up, instructions will be provided next week on how to request these accounts.
