Monthly updates for SFBG Volunteers
December 2021
Dear Volunteers,
Happy December! With the sun setting earlier and the Garden closing before it gets too dark, we hope you're still taking time to soak up some nature. This newsletter has a few ways you can support the Garden this winter.
Thank you so much for all of the hard work you've done this year! There are truly no words for how grateful we are for our volunteer community. Whether you were out with the Green Team getting your hands dirty, helping families during Bean Sprouts, or at the Library, Arbor, or Bookstoreyour support has been vital.
As the holidays approach, no matter what you celebrate, we hope you have a wonderful time.

Searching for Volunteer Translators

Magnolia season is back for 2022! We are hoping to make our beautiful magnolia collection available to more members of the community, and are in search of volunteers who would be willing to join a magnolia tour tp act as a volunteer translator.
If you are interested in this opportunity to join a tour and speak another language proficiently, especially Spanish, Chinese, Tagalog, ASL, or Russian, please let us know! Dates and other information to be worked out with those interested.

Seasonal Volunteer Opportunities

Last Call for Wreath Making Volunteers!
Wreath Making is approaching this weekend with events on December 9, 10, and 11. We're still looking for some support with pruningset-up and clean-up. Sign up with a friend and collect your own Garden greens to make your very own wreath while we put on some holiday tunes and ready the space. No previous experience required.
See all available shifts here.
Gift Wrapping Volunteers
Volunteers needed to staff the Gift Wrapping Table at the Garden Bookstore throughout the holidays. Volunteers will provide free gift wrapping for items purchased at the Bookstore. This will be low-stress wrapping at an outdoor table (no previous experience needed). You'll work alongside the Bookstore and Plant Arbor staff and volunteers.
Shifts are available on Saturdays and Sundays and a few key weekdays through Thursday December 23. Shifts are three hours, morning 10am-1pm, or afternoon 1pm-4pm. Sign up here!
If you would like to volunteer with a friend, please email Bookstore Manager, Whitney Ochoa
Bean Sprouts Family Days - Special Holiday Hours
Take a trek up to the Children's Garden to support our Bean Sprouts program! We'll be holding programs Monday-Thursday, 10am-2pm, during both holiday weeks.
Greet families and hand out tools for digging and playing while teaching youth all about our most explorable garden. Background check and some training required.
Special Project - Assisting Plant Record Manager
We are searching for one volunteer who can help our Plant Record Manager, Tory Stewart, with a special project involving drilling holes for the stakes in our display labels. This could be done at home if someone has a drill press available, but we are also able to coordinate time for this volunteer to use the engraving room.
This volunteer should like working with their hands, be comfortable using machinery and following safety protocols, can stand for an extended period of time.
Sound like a fit for you? Email Tory for more information!

Regular Volunteer Opportunities

Bookstore and Plant Arbor

We are weeking more long-term volunteers to support these important locations in regular, weekday roles. No prior experience required! If you love talking about the Garden and interacting with folks from all over, this role might befor you. A deep love of the Garden is tucked between the pages of our many books and hidden among the trinkets we keep here. Can you help us share it with others? Bookstore and Arbor volunteers must be vaccinated. Email volunteer@sfbg.org to get started.

Slices of Joy

  • The Amendment to our Lease & Management Agreement to add the Japanese Tea Garden and Conservatory of Flowers passed unanimously at the Recreation & Parks Commission meeting. Next up - the Board of Supervisors for final approval!

  • The fencing project along MLK is approaching the finish line! Big thanks to everyone's hard work to help keep the Garden safe and secure.

  • The Garden is free to all visitors on December 25, as well as January 1. Bring a friend or some family from out of town to enjoy the holidays amidst our lovely blooms.
Thank you for all that you do and have done for the Garden!
Warmly,
Jenn
