Dear SURVIVORS Supporter,
Today, on June 26th, we commemorate the United Nations' International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, a crucial occasion that sheds light on the gravity of torture and its impact on individuals worldwide. Its creation by the United Nations General Assembly stemmed from the collective recognition of the urgent need to combat and eliminate torture, a gross violation of human rights that inflicts severe physical and psychological suffering.
Today we pay tribute to the incredible strength, resilience, and courage of survivors of torture and their families. We stand in awe of their unwavering spirit and honor their journey towards healing, justice, and reclaiming their lives. Survivors of torture have faced unimaginable pain, both physical and psychological. Yet, they have not been defined by their past, but instead, they have risen above it, defying the darkness that once engulfed them. Their indomitable spirit serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration to us all.
The significance of June 26th lies in its profound message: torture can never be justified, tolerated, or forgotten. By raising awareness, promoting dialogue, and supporting survivors, our organization strives to uphold the principles of human dignity, respect for human rights, and the rule of law. Today serves as a reminder of our duty to protect the most vulnerable and ensure their voices are heard.
Amnesty International has reported torture is still being carried out in 141 countries, or 75% of the world. Global conflicts, political unrest, and the erosion of democratic values have created fertile ground for the perpetration of torture. We cannot remain silent in the face of such atrocities. The need for advocacy against torture has reached a critical juncture, and we must act.
To be united against torture means standing together, across borders, cultures, and backgrounds. It means joining hands in solidarity, advocating for human rights, and demanding an end to the unspeakable suffering of torture victims.
Today, let us reaffirm our commitment to healing, justice, and compassion. Let us honor the resilience of survivors and pledge to work tirelessly until torture becomes a thing of the past. Together, we can restore dignity, rebuild lives, and bring lasting change.
