PARENTS & FAMILIES NEWSLETTER
| |
Dear NYU Parents and Families,
May is an incredibly exciting time for everyone - the end of the semester, the warm weather, but especially for those with graduating students! Congrats grads!
With that in mind, we've highlighed some of the activities and resources that are particularly relevant for those families who will boast an NYU graduate soon, but, really, this information can be helpful for all parents and families. Time goes quickly nowadays and - in the not too distant future - parents and families with students in their first year will shortly find themselves celebrating this incredible milestone in thier own student's life. Here's to wishing you and yours a wonderful end of the academic year and start of summer (at least, here in NYC!), and congratulations again to those who are graduating. We'll check in before the school year starts again in September, but in the meantime, should you need anything, please reference the resources and information on the Parents & Families webpage, and be in touch should you have any questions.
Very truly yours,
Rafael Rodriguez
Associate Vice President and Dean of Students
Division of Student Affairs, NYU

NYU Commencement and Related Activities
| |
If you’re traveling to New York to cheer for your favorite NYU grad, your itinerary is pretty packed already. There are the school ceremonies, Grad Alley (our big Commencement Eve block party for grads and their families, under the violet glow of the Empire State Building), and, of course, the main event up at Yankee Stadium—and that’s before you figure in all the photoshoots and dinner reservations. It’s exciting! And, you know…a lot. Which is why we recommend getting out for a breather when you can. Check out our What (Else) To Do When You're in Town For NYU's 2023 Commencement guide for other great activities and options to round out your time at NYU and in NYC.

Recent Elections for NYU’s Student Government Assembly (SGA)Student leadership comes in many forms at NYU. With the recent elections of the Executive Committee of NYU’s Student Government Assembly (SGA), we wanted to share more about this body and their work. SGA is the overarching student government body at NYU, with a seat at the table of the University Senate.
Members of SGA work with other students, organizations, faculty, and administrators at NYU to create the best university experience. With their team of Student Senators, Council Presidents, Committee Chairs, and Students, SGA advocates on behalf of students, create and further student-focused agendas, and lead new initiatives at the university. Perhaps your student is interested in joining such a group - aside from the elected representatives, there are many ways students can get involved with the work of the SGA.

The Benefits - and Network - of Being an NYU Alum
The moment a student graduates from NYU, they join a vast community of over 600,000 alumni as a member of the New York University Alumni Association (NYUAA). Indeed this community boasts a huge range of talented people - from folks in creative careers to business owners, and many more. Students can engage with many alumni through the Wasserman Center for Career Development’s Violet Network.
As graduates, membership in the NYUAA is free for life, extended to alumni from every NYU school, and includes an array of exclusive alumni benefits. The NYUAA is committed to connecting members of the NYU alumni community to the University and to each other through a wide range of communications, programming, services, and volunteer opportunities. Visit the NYU Alumni webpage to learn more about the NYU Alumni Association and everything else related to a graduate's alumni status.

The NYU Changemaker Center
The NYU Changemaker Center helps students create meaningful change on the issues and within the communities that matter most to them through immersive programs, global awards advising, experiential learning, and events. When students connect with the Center, they join a community of passionate and action-oriented students and gain access to a wealth of resources.
The Changemaker Center provides highly personalized and intensive coaching support for students and alumni applying to prestigious award and/or scholarship programs like the Fulbright, Truman, Udall, and Goldwater, among other awards. Did you know that NYU is one of the top 10 Fulbright Program scholar-producing institutions in the country? Through the Social Impact Career Hub, the Center offers specialized coaching, networking, and experiential learning opportunities to launch students into their lives beyond NYU. Whether it is for graduate students participating in our Social Sector Leadership Diversity Fellows program (now entering its 10th year) or a sophomore student joining Camp Changemaker (a comprehensive leadership development program for undergraduate students focused on social change and social impact), the Changemaker Center helps students convert their passion for the issues into tangible change in the larger world.
