Weekly Announcements for November 17, 2023
Note: There will be no Weekly Announcements next week in observation of the Thanksgiving holiday. Announcements will resume Friday, Dec 1st.
BYM Trans Day of Remembrance Vigil
Transgender Awareness Week (Nov 13-19) and Transgender Day of Remembrance (Nov 20) is a time for the LGBTQ+ community and allies to celebrate, uplift, and honor our trans community. While discussion of trans people in the media often centers on negativity and violence, Transgender Awareness Week creates the opportunity to celebrate stories of trans people thriving. Trans Day of Remembrance at the end of the Week of Awareness is a solemn occasion to memorialize those killed due to transphobia and to speak out against the horror of anti-trans violence.
On Monday, Nov 20th at 7pm, the BYM Working Group on Welcoming Trans & Non-Binary Friends will be hosting an online Meeting for Worship/vigil online. All BYM Friends are encouraged to participate in their local Trans Day of Remembrance or BYM's online vigil. We will honor the 320 people killed over the last year in acts of anti-trans violence and create a community of care and resilience among Friends.
Mushroom Log Workshop at Opequon Quaker Camp, Dec 1
It's time to begin clearing trees for new cabins at Opequon Quaker Camp at Rolling Ridge, so let's make some mushroom logs (suitable for holiday gift giving)! We'll gather at the Rolling Ridge Outdoor Educaiton Center - the new home of Opequaon Quaker Camp - located at 671 FLOC Way, Harpers Ferry, WV anytime from 10am - 4pm. Please bring a snacks or lunch if you would like to be there over the lunch hour, a water bottle, warm clothes, closed toed boots, and work gloves. You could also bring a cordless drill and bits if you like. Make some logs to be used at camp or leave a donation and take some home to grow in your yard or to give as holiday gifts!
Coffee Hour with BYM Ministry Committee, Nov 30th
The BYM Ministry and Pastoral Care Committee is hosting a "coffee hour" intended for Clerks and members of ministry (and pastoral care) committees from local meetings. Others are welcome to attend. The meeting will be informal and a discussion of issues that we think are important to local meetings. We need some help with some of the work and even designing next steps. We also want to hear issues that local ministry (and pastoral care) committees are facing. It is all about collaboration to enrich the spiritual life and vibrancy of our local meetings. We don't have a list of all the clerks of local ministry and/or pastoral care committee clerks (yet) so please spread the word to your meetings. For more information email Greg Robb co-clerk M&PC committee.
Prayer Vigil for a Ceasefire in the War in Gaza, Nov 20th
On Monday, November 20th from 6pm - 7pm, join the National Council of Churches and many other ecumenical partners in a public time of prayer for peace in the Middle East. The vigil will take place at Lafayette Square in Washington, DC. Speakers include Bishop William J. Barber as well as speakers from the Friends Committee on National Legislation.

Do you make your living as a farmer or horticulturalist? Would you like to talk to others with the same calling? If you are interested in participating, please contact us at: firstname.lastname@example.org
Convergent Friends: A Model of Renewal, Nov 29 @ 7pm
Join Robin Mohr (FWCC) and Wes Daniels (Guildford College) for an online Insights Conversation on the Convergent Friends model of renewal. How do we continue to value tradition while allowing for innovative and contextual expressions of the Quaker faith to emerge? How do we foster deeper participation and decentralization of power rather than entrenched institutionalism? The Convergent Friends movement proposes a model that holds together both tradition and innovation in ways that foster participatory change.
