Dear Members,
It is September already!
How can the months disappear so fast?
Only a few weeks until the ATM & Payments Innovation Summit in Madrid, which is being staged 17-19 October.
Still time to join the hundreds of payment professionals who have already registered - but you need to contact Mary Lawrence right away to guarantee your place.
An email to mary.lawrence@atmia.com is the start of ensuring you don’t miss out!
I am looking forward to seeing you all in Madrid!
Another thing you shouldn’t delay is making YOUR contribution to the European Advocacy Fund to support our efforts in 2018 and beyond. Please click here to give generously NOW! If you don’t our advocacy work will be curtailed or have to cease altogether. Do NOT leave it to others: why should THEY bother, if YOU don’t?
On the subject of advocacy, an “access to cash” review has been announced in the UK. All ATMIA members may wish to respond by 30 September 2018. You can find out more here.
If you want to stay in touch with my thinking on Payment Choice and related matters, you can follow my personal Linkedin account at linkedin.com/in/rondelnevo.
On the theme of staying in touch, don’t miss a great webinar on 13 September! Entitled “European ATMIA 2018 Update”, the webinar will put you firmly in the know as to EVERYTHING that is happening in your industry around Europe. This will include an overview of the Madrid Summit.
I am delighted to introduce Xus Technologies to the European family of the ATMIA. You can read more about this new member later in this Newsletter.
Also, if you would like a story about your company to feature in an edition of our European newsletter, please send the material to myself at ron.delnevo@atmia.com and Jo Ryan, my co-editor, at jo90ryan@hotmail.com. An ideal package is 250 words, plus either a photograph or logo (supplied as a separate .jpg or .png file), along with your website address.
Finally, a new feature. Each month from now on I will be asking the European ATMIA Member of the Month to tell everyone what the ATMIA means to them.
We start this month with our MoM for September, Fujitsu.
You can read their views on the ATMIA below.
See you all in Madrid!
Best wishes,

Ron
P.S. Have you thought about being a European Regional Sponsor of the ATMIA? THERE ARE SOME GREAT BENEFITS! You can look at them right here.

What our Member of the Month for September - Fujitsu - thinks of the ATMIA!

Ron Delnevo spoke to Juan J Alert. Juan is Fujitsu’s Head of Retail Banking in EMEIA.
What is the key value you and your company want to get out of ATMIA in the year ahead?
We want to get confirmation for our Strategic Vision on technical and business evolution for the Self-Service channel as a whole, particularly the
Transformation Process of the Bank's operating model, especially in consolidated territories such as Europe and emerging markets such as Latin America.
We believe that ATMIA will help us deepen understanding of the clear collaboration of cash and low-value transactions processing by the Self-Service solutions, including the transformation to the new model of bank branch and its digitisation, something that we believe is strategic for now and in the future of Retail Banking.
What does your company feel are the key benefits of your ATMIA Membership?
Being a member of ATMIA allows us to be permanently updated in the evolution of the Self-Service business channel, as well as its technological and business trends. ATMIA has become the Number One community for the ATM industry Financial Entities and Solution Providers, for shared-learning both about the present situation and building the future.
Do you attend our Events?
YES. Of course! They are always a great opportunity to learn about and discuss the current and future vision of our Clients and Suppliers, as well as providing a platform to demonstrate our competence in a business line such as Self-Service, which is strategic for us.
How would you sum up in one sentence the value to Fujitsu of belonging to ATMIA since 2012?
We believe that ATMIA clearly promotes the ATM channel and helps ensure its constant evolution, protecting our Clients assets and giving us clarity for the future, which is clearly something essential for our business.

The Universal Cash Deposits at UK ATMs - And Other Innovation Issues

We at the ATMIA always support more innovation in our industry. For example, in the UK currently we are asking all Card Issuing LINK Members to sign up for the Universal Cash Deposit Transaction. This wonderful yet practical innovation will allow cardholders with bank accounts to deposit cash at ANY enabled ATM in the UK, rather than having to search for a branch or ATM of their own bank. With only 8000 bank branches in the UK but 70,000 ATMs, this innovation makes perfect sense.
For more on innovation at UK ATMs, please read this article from a recent edition of Fintech Finance Magazine.

      Dynamic Currency Conversion at ATMs

As reported elsewhere in this Newsletter, the European Commission has now announced that new transparency proposals for DCC will NOT include a cap on margins. Full details can be read here. Work will continue to ensure there is as little impact as possible on ATM operators, whether banks or independents. If you want to help, please make a contribution to the European Advocacy Fund.

Supporting LINK in the UK - Including Limiting the Interchange Cut to 10%!

Potential changes to LINK interchange are the big threat in 2018. If they are allowed to happen, it could be the beginning of the end for convenient ATM services - and access to cash - in the UK.
LINK is now proposing a 20% arbitrary reduction in interchange payments over a 4 year period, starting on 1 July 2018.
This dramatic reduction in interchange, if implemented, would render many thousands of ATMs uneconomic. Many may well disappear completely. Others might switch to directly charging for cash withdrawals.
The UK Treasury Select Committee, Which?, the Federation of Small Businesses, the Association of Convenience Stores and the ATMIA have ALL called for an Independent Inquiry into all the issues surrounding LINK.
In May, the ATMIA hosted a meeting of retail organisations, consumer interest groups and charities, all of whom are against the arbitrary cuts in LINK interchange because of the potential impact on the UK ATM estate and convenient public and commercial access to cash. Which?, the Federation of Small Businesses and the Association of Convenience Stores were just three of the organisations which participated.

Also in May, Ron Delnevo, our European Executive Director appeared before the Scottish Affairs Committee, in the UK Parliament. Ron outlined the strong arguments for maintaining and improving ATM services in the UK, as bank branches disappear.
You can read more in this recent article...
As you can see, the ATMIA is promoting a spirit of compromise - and realism. The ATM industry - banks and independents - can work together to ensure SmartATMs can be economically located in every Community in the UK, replacing lost bank branches as local financial services touch-points.
LINK have responded by announcing that the arbitrary cut in interchange is likely to be only 10%, rather than the originally mooted 20%.
The ATMIA warmly applauds the flexibility of LINK, in listening and responding positively to alternative views. The signs are good that a dynamic, innovative and cost-effective LINK will be central to meeting the community financial services needs of the UK public for many, many years to come.

Supporting Payment Choice in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden

We still await the decision of the Swedish Government as to how it will act to ensure convenient access to cash is improved, across the nation. It seems likely that off-branch cash deposit and recycling ATMs will be a big part of the solution.
Denmark is also a country in which the ATMIA is taking a keen interest. The good news is that it remains obligatory for retailers to accept cash during normal opening hours. Long may this financially inclusive obligation continue!
From Norway, some great news! The Yes To Cash movement, officially founded in 2016, is making great progress by urging members and their families and friends to support businesses which accept cash payments. Read more of this exciting development here.
In Finland, some vested interests are trying to rush the country towards the choice-poor "cashless society" status. You can read more here. Also in Finland, attempts are being made to reintroduce “ disloyalty fees”, imposed when bank customers use non-bank ATMs. Since non-bank ATMs are serving the Finish public well and, in doing so, supporting Financial Inclusion, the ATMIA is working with Finish members to ensure such onerous fees are not reintroduced. You can read the ATMIA’s letter to the Finish Financial Services Authority here.
The GREAT news is that the Finnish Financial Services Regulator has now agreed with the ATMIA and our members! You can read the full ruling by the Regulator here.
Returning to Sweden, the ATMIA will be working with the pro cash movement throughout 2018.
Ron Delnevo appeared at the recent Nordic Finance Forum in Stockholm. His presentation emphasised the need for Community Financial Services Hubs to be introduced in Sweden. These Hubs will incorporate SmartATMs, to allow the Deposit, Recycling and Withdrawal of both notes and coins. Such machines, situated in every Community, are vital to the smooth and convenient use of cash by citizens and businesses.

      Interesting reading on this topic:
An article from ‘Security User Sverige’ on the fight to maintain cash, written by Anders Ellqvist, 15 March 2016. Also, an English translation of 'Cards on the Table', a hugely insightful pamphlet produced by supporters of cash and payment choice in Sweden.

To help support your ATM network, on average our order completion and return time is just eight days with a 99% repair success rate without chargeable parts or extras. In addition, we can also accommodate SLAs meaning a faster flow of parts to the field and less time without stock.
All of our repairs come with a warranty of up to six months with no additional fees from the date of install - not from the date of shipping - which is monitored using smart labels to identify them if they're returned for repair in the future. This process is able to ensure a full life cycle profile can be captured and utilised.
In summary, we pride ourselves on providing the highest level of repairs without extra charges and we challenge new customers to send us their Beyond Economic Repair units and End of Service Life units to prove we are more than just words. These repairs will be completed on a no-repair-no-fee basis, with no hidden costs and a full warranty provided on every part.

              by ATMIA
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, SIOUX FALLS, SD, USA, - ATMIA today released a new research report by a leading UK criminologist on what former ATM criminals think when they target ATMs. The study, entitled “Offences Involving ATMs: Insights into how Offenders see ATMs as Targets” shares the results of interviews with eight ATM offenders, six of whom were involved in some sort of physical attack on the ATM, while two used the ATM as a facilitator of crime. The aim of the research was to highlight their thinking processes as to why ATMs were targeted and their insights on any security measures they may have encountered.
