In November, Visiting Asst. Prof. of Physics John Eric Goff delivered a keynote address at the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) 51st Annual Conference at the Peppermill Resort in Reno, Nevada. His talk, titled “Mathematics is the Language of the Universe; Physics is the Poetry!” discussed the current state of sports physics research along with the challenges and opportunities facing the field, from changing student demographics to the role of AI in sport and academia.

Artificial Intelligence, Romance, and Consciousness

Philosophy professors Justin Tiehen and Ariela Tubert recently delivered a lecture to a packed room of students, faculty, staff, and community members about a hot-button topic: romantic relationships with AI chatbots. Following the lecture, Tiehen and Tubert sat down with The News Tribune to talk about AI safeguards, the tricky problem of defining consciousness, and the philosophical implications of dating an AI zombie.

Several Logger scholar-athletes earned All-Northwest Conference honors to cap off an incredible fall sports season. Maddie Badger ’28 was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association's First Team Regional Award. The Logger Women's Soccer team swept the all-conference honors, with Leila Hausia-Haugen ’26 named Offensive Player of the Year, Kate Short ’29 named Rookie of the Year, and Stephanie Cox named Northwest Conference Coach of the Year. Men's soccer players Rhys Foote ’27 and Kody Carmel ’26 also earned all-conference honors.

Reimagining Justice Through the Humanities
|
This past month, resident artists from New York’s Reentry Theater of Harlem have been working with students across campus to reflect on current systems of justice and incarceration. The project is made possible by a $1.3 million grant from the Mellon Foundation for Reimagining Justice and Carceral Systems through the Humanities and included workshops in storytelling, drawing, and mask-making.
