Dear Colleague:

At Ball State University, we provide premier educational experiences for our students so that they will have fulfilling careers and lead meaningful lives. Recent national recognition for our academic programs demonstrates our University’s excellence and innovation.

DesignIntelligence, an independent company dedicated to the success of organizations in architecture, engineering, construction, and design, gave high marks to programs in the R. Wayne Estopinal College of Architecture and Planning, and it named Malcolm Cairns, Professor of Landscape Architecture, among the “Most Admired Educators” in the discipline. DesignIntelligence ranked our landscape architecture program eighth “Most Admired” among undergraduate programs and 12th “Most Admired” among graduate programs. The interior design program was 10th among programs of similar size in “Most Hired From” institutions, and the architecture program was 15th among programs of similar size in “Most Hired From” institutions.

The Princeton Review, in partnership with Entrepreneur magazine, ranked our entrepreneurial management degree in the Miller College of Business No. 25 among undergraduate programs. A distinctive feature of the students’ educational experience is E-Day, short for Evaluation Day. Each senior entrepreneurial management major must present a business plan to a panel of alumni entrepreneurs and business executives. The student passes the class only if the expert panel approves the plan.

These recognitions are just two examples of how our University prepares and inspires students. At Ball State, we believe higher education should be the beginning of a lifelong quest for knowledge, solutions, and service. We live that belief by exposing our students to innovative, collaborative learning experiences—brought to life by talented faculty and dedicated staff.

News to Use:

On December 14, Ball State will celebrate the achievements of more than 800 graduates at Fall Commencement, which will take place at 10 a.m. in Worthen Arena. The speaker is Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski III, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Dr. Hrabowski is a respected scholar, administrator, and author. U.S. News & World Report and other publications have recognized UMBC as a model for student success. I look forward to hearing Dr. Hrabowski’s inspiring remarks.
If you are in Indianapolis on January 9, 2020, I invite you to learn more about our University at Ball State Day at the Statehouse, which will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. Representatives of our academic colleges will attend the event at the Indiana Statehouse at 200 West Washington Street. This is an opportunity to see how our University sparks intellectual curiosity and serves our neighbors near and far.
Telemundo Indy interviewed Dr. Susana Rivera-Mills, Ball State’s provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. Spanish-speaking audiences learned how our beautiful campus, welcoming culture, and focus on innovation and collaboration provide the perfect place for our students to find their passions and purposes. Our strategic plan, Destination 2040: Our Flight Path, addresses our responsibility to recruit, retain, and educate our students, including first generation college students. As part of this effort, the Division of Student Affairs hosted the “I Am First” Celebration on November 8 in conjunction with the annual National First-Generation College Celebration. Our University will use the responses to a survey conducted during the event to inform future initiatives. Improving our service to first generation Cardinals and their families is personal to me. My father was the first in his family to graduate from college. His educational experience changed the trajectory for our entire family.
This is a good time to be a fan of Ball State women’s volleyball. During the regular season, the team ran the league’s longest active winning streak to six matches and claimed a third consecutive Mid-American Conference (MAC) West Division Championship. On November 24, the Cardinals won the MAC Volleyball Championship Tournament, increasing their winning streak to nine and earning a berth in the NCAA 2019 Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship tournament in December.
