Welcome to the winter issue of the Puget Sound Marketing & Communications newsletter! We're so excited to share tips for how you can make your work a strong part of the university's brand and how we can help you with projects.
We are excited to introduce phase one of our Faculty Experts Guide, now live on our website! This resource will help media outlets find and connect with knowledgeable professors for interviews and expert commentary, which will ultimately elevate the reputation of Puget Sound.
We're incorporating keyword searches based on faculty expertise and programs to make it easier for reporters to find the right expert for their story. We already have a lot of expertise on our list, but are always looking for more! If you're a permanent faculty member interested in this opportunity, please complete the brief survey below.

Updates from your favorite .edu |
In Fall 2023 and early 2024, in collaboration with our partners in Technology Services (including a new in-house web developer), we worked on a lot of behind-the-scenes updates that you may or may not notice, but believe us -- they'll help a lot!
- Switched to a new website hosting platform.
- Launched the first phase of a renewed Experts Guide resource.
- Completed a partial upgrade of our Drupal system, to version 9.5.11.
- Successfully published an XML site map to improve our external search performance.
Other updates planned in 2024 include:
- Displaying emeriti faculty information on the website (early February)
-
Completing the remainder of the Drupal upgrade to version 10, including a PHP upgrade
- Adding 360-degree imagery on the residence hall pages
- Integrating additional content housed in Peoplesoft into the website display, including Orientation schedules and Degree Requirements
- Improving our SEO and search performance
- Updating our site navigation and spacing changes
- Consolidating internal and external audience content for academic programs
- Improving our event calendar, including automation of event display in selected areas and synchronization with the Logger Athletics website calendar

Are you excited to be a part of the Puget Sound brand? Using proper logos has never been more important, as we strive to make our brand stronger and more consistent campuswide. If you don't have the proper logo lockup for your department (see below for examples), let us know and we'll send a variety of colors and file types to you. We appreciate you!

To Canva or not to Canva? |
We love Print & Copy Services' new campus-wide Canva account that brings flyer, poster, and email design to all Loggers. Also, a big shoutout to Human Resources for incorporating Canva training courses into their Professional Development & Enrichment Conference earlier in the month! However, as we navigate this new software opportunity, please remember that certain institutional pieces must go through the MarCom Office. Here's a list to help you evaluate:
| |
- Student clubs and groups
- Posters and flyers for internal events
- Anything external-facing
- Items used to recruit new students
-
Any named lectures or series (e.g. Swope, Pierce)
If you're not sure if you should create something yourself or ask for our help, please just ask!

Do you have a message for Logger parents? |
Last fall, we launched our monthly Parents & Families Newsletter as a joint effort between Alumni & Parent Relations, Student Affairs, and Marketing & Communications. These missives, which are distributed the first Thursday of every month, reach nearly 3,000 current student parents and boast a 70% open rate. Each month features a spotlight on a student-serving department, important deadlines, blogs or articles relevant to the parent experience, and events. If you have an idea for something that would be a good piece of content for the newsletter, please email Brad Cole, Office Manager, Alumni & Parent Relations.
Shoutout to our brand heroes of the month:
Human Resources! |
In each newsletter, we'll call out someone on campus who is doing an excellent job being a steward of Puget Sound or excelling in other marketing and communications efforts. This month, we'd like to celebrate Human Resources for its informative, clear, and on-brand newsletter, packed with maroon highlights.
Pro tip: If you're interested in creating your own departmental newsletter, we can help! We have software called Emma that can be used to send well-designed and responsive emails -- free for you to use.
