Make plans to join Council Member Jennie Robinson at the District 3 Town Hall on Thursday, May 7, at 6 p.m. at the Sandra Moon Community Complex, 7901 Bailey Cove Rd. SE. City Planner James Vandiver will be the featured speaker discussing the 2025 City of Huntsville Development Review. The presentation will have a special focus on District 3.

Celebrating 140 Years at John Blue Company
Council Member Robinson presented the John Blue Company with a resolution honoring the business’ 140 years of operation at the April 23 Council meeting. The company was started in North Carolina but relocated to Huntsville in 1945, becoming a trusted provider for accurate and reliable pumping solutions, offering consumers a vast range of piston, centrifugal, diaphragm, spray and injection pumps. The company has demonstrated a continued commitment to meeting the ever-evolving needs of farmers, applicators and industries throughout the country.

Ditto Landing Community Cleanup 
Make some friends and join Council Member Robinson to help beautify District 3 by participating in the Ditto Cleanup Day sponsored by the Southeast Family YMCA on Saturday, May 9, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Ditto Store/Fuel Dock, 293 Ditto Landing Rd. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people and enjoy the scenic backdrop of the Tennessee River while keeping Ditto Landing looking great. The City's Green Team will provide all equipment for the cleanup. For more information, email Bev Capps.

900 Basketball Coaching Wins and Counting
Grissom High basketball coach Jack Doss was recognized by Council Members Robinson and Michelle Watkins for winning his 900th game in February. Council Member Robinson presented Doss with a resolution honoring his nearly 50 years in coaching, which has included stints at Huntsville high schools J.O. Johnson, Mae Jemison and Butler. His teams have won 10 state championships.

Heroes on the Block Returns
The fun returns to the Dr. Robert Shurney Legacy Center with the second annual Heroes on the Block community party on Saturday, May 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Huntsville Police and Huntsville Fire & Rescue team up to connect with residents while providing free food and fun for the entire family. There will also be inflatables and games for children and live music for everyone to enjoy. This event is a great opportunity to get an up-close look at police and fire vehicles and learn more about how they keep our city safe.

The 'Sort Of' Retirement of Rodney McCallie  
Community Development bid farewell to a hero. Well, almost. Rodney McCallie, who spearheaded volunteer construction projects to rehabilitate homes for low-income seniors, is retiring after 24 years. But to the surprise of no one who knows him, McCallie is not going far. “If you enjoy what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life,” he said.

HPD Captain Graduates from FBI Academy
Huntsville Police Capt. Tony McElyea (right in photo) recently graduated from the FBI National Academy, a prestigious honor that McElyea described as “challenging, transformational and collaborative.” The academy is an intensive 10-week program and McElyea is bringing insight and strategies he learned to the Huntsville Police Department.

Huntsville's Hall of Fame Firefighter 
Stephanie Pinto, a former star softball player at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and now a captain at Huntsville Fire & Rescue, was inducted into the Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame on April 13. While that was quite an honor, for Pinto, it’s the third hall of fame that has welcomed her. Read the blog and watch the video to learn more about her inspiring story.
