Anthropology’s Jeffrey Splitstoser identified a 6,200-year-old Peruvian textile dyed indigo blue, produced more than 1,800 years before the previously known oldest fabric in that color. The finding sheds light on the advanced textile technology of the ancient Andean people—skills that may have led to a wardrobe staple: blue jeans.

Biology and chemistry double major and Iraqi native Reem Al Shabeeb spends 12 hours a week in two laboratories working on innovative research that may impact our understanding of infertility in humans and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
Tara Scully examines oyster shells with student researchers
From research on herbicide poisoning to shell conservation efforts to repopulate marine life, Biology’s Tara Scully is working with students to revive an ecosystem of oysters in the Chesapeake Bay. Their efforts inside and outside the lab are confronting the ecological crisis threatening one of the world’s most important waterways.

Cable television pioneer Char Beales, BA ’73, and her husband, GW School of Business Professor Howard Beales, pledged $3.2 million to fund an endowed professorship of accountability and journalism at SMPA. The bequest represents the largest single gift in the school’s history.
