Veterans Day: Recognition and Thanks
WHS ASB/Leadership students in coordination with the Social Studies and Performing Arts departments organized Veterans Day recognition assemblies that took place throughout the day during students’ social studies class periods on Wednesday, November 10. Thanks was given to WHS Choir (Period 1), Evie Wirt (Periods 2, 3, & 4), and Haley Ahlstrom (Period 5, 6, & 7) for performing the National Anthem, as well as to Maya Olson (Periods 1 & 2), Isabel Gonsalves (Period 3), Michael Millar (Periods 4 5, & 6), and Simon Goss-Grubs (Period 7) who each performed taps during the assemblies.
Our collective thanks was also expressed to keynote speaker Major Josh Bieler. Major Bieler started his career as a cadet at the United States Air Force Academy. After graduation, he was an officer working in the Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle Program in the Air Force Space Command at Los Angeles Air Force Base. There he was working in acquisitions, operations, and finance for the US satellite launch program that launched and monitored our reconnaissance intel, GPS, and weapons-based satellites. After 9/11 Major Bieler was put in charge of our domestic security operations protecting and securing some of the country's most secure intellectual property. During his active-duty career, he also worked at the Air Force Propulsion Laboratory, the Kennedy Space Center, and Edwards Air Force Base. Major Bieler transitioned to the Air Force Reserves and works on global logistic support and operational mission support with the 446th MSG, supporting our Global War on Terrorism. He is also an Academy Admissions Liaison and founder and CEO of Vector Services, an INC 5000, service-disabled veteran owned business. His business is recognized as one of the top Vet100 most influential businesses supporting veterans’ initiatives and careers.
We hope all our students and families were able to enjoy Veterans Day yesterday spending some time reflecting upon and/or thanking our veterans past and present who have served or are serving our country.

Message from your WHS Counselors
Hi Falcon Family,
Our first short week of the school year, YAH, a well-deserved break!
We hope you enjoyed the day off with your family and took a moment to reflect on our American heroes who serve our country and protect us.
You might also take a moment to reflect on how the return to in-person learning has been for your student so far this school year. As a counseling team, we are aware of the new challenges placed on students and families due to Covid and the experience of remote learning.
A recent article written by a Seattle area teacher resonates with us: https://www.parentmap.com/article/seattle-area-teacher-reflects-how-return-person-school-going.
The article highlights the challenges some students and staff members face as we have return to school in-person. We are all working to get back into (school) shape!
Here are some tips to help your student get back into shape:
- Celebrate how far your student has come this school year, even the small things.
- Praise the fact that your student is capable of doing something that might be challenging or uncomfortable. Encourage them to push through and find measures of support.
- Think of quarter grades as a snapshot of where your student is right now. Use them as a gauge to determine what is working well and what can be improved upon before the end of the semester in January.
- Partner with your student’s teachers, counselor, and administrators. School staff are also getting back into shape and have your child’s best interests at heart. Please be patient with us as we bend, flex, and work to help and support your student. We want our kids to succeed!
- Students want to spend time with you, despite how they might appear. Take time to connect as a family and enjoy time not focused on school. Students want to know their parents/guardians will listen to them free of judgement.
- Practice kindness and patience. We have never returned to school during a pandemic and the road signs on how to navigate the barriers are not always clear. The unknown can create stress for students and adults alike, but we can problem-solve any situation if we work together.
- We will get through this! The WHS community is resilient and strong. Please reach out to us if we can help.

College Visits for Woodinville High School Student
WHS students can now sign up for college visits! This year we will offer some visits in-person and some visits virtually. Students in grades 9-12 are welcome to attend college visits.
The list of the upcoming College Visits can be found here.
FRESHMAN: It is not typical for students in 9th grade to attend college visits unless there is a college they are exceptionally interested in.

Class of 2022, please verify the spelling of your name to be printed on your diploma and in the Commencement program:
Please check your NSD student email account for an important message! All seniors have received an email and a link to a Google Form https://forms.gle/QjjMsnETFZn6j9NC6 so they each may verify the name to be printed on their diploma and in the Commencement program. Seniors will need to refer to the name verification email to complete the Google Form. They may also refer to the name printed on their transcript which they may find in the documents tab of their StudentVue account. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Porter, WHS Counseling Office Manager at rporter2@nsd.org

Yearbook Information
Senior Pictures:
Here is the Link to our Senior Photo List. I would strongly encourage seniors to double check that we have the correct photo for you by November 12. These pictures will be placed in the book and we will be sending these pages off to the publisher for printing. Once they are gone there is nothing we can do. Please take care of this quickly, do not wait.
There are three columns next to the senior’s name. One labeled “nice”, one labeled “Dorian-ASB Picture” and lastly “No Picture”.
Each column has a “yes” written in it if that is the picture we have. For many of our seniors we have both a “nice” and the “Dorian-ASB Picture”. We of course will use the “nice” picture.
If we only have the “Dorian” one that is the picture we will use. If this is a mistake, please email me your picture ASAP. Please remember it needs to be a minimum of 3.5MB in size, no hats, no props, just you in a clear head and shoulder picture.
Senior Grad Ads:
Grad Ads are up and running. What is a Grad Ad? Well it’s space in the Senior Section of the Yearbook where you can applaud your child’s achievements with a tribute in their yearbook. Celebrate with words of congratulations, praise and encouragement. You can also add the pictures we wouldn’t take in the Senior Portrait section, with animals, props etc. Please click the link to purchase Balfour Grad Ad Link. They go off sale on Dec. 17th at Midnight, Pacific Time.
Ad Pricing: Full Page Ad $200, 1/2 Page Ad $110, 1/4 Page Ad $55, 1/8 Page Ad $30
Steps to purchase an ad:
- Log in using the above link. Ads are purchased online through Balfour only.
- Sign in using your child's name, I think you have to also create an account giving Balfour an email address. Please be sure to use an address that you regularly use/read. Once you purchase the ad, you will be sent a link to use to upload your pictures and words. This does not always come right away, it may take a day before confirmation of purchase happens. And confirmation of purchase is actually the email containing your link to create your ad. You do not need to complete the ad on the same day you purchase it, you will have until January 3, 2022 to complete the ad.
- We ask that you don’t create your ad using Photoshop or any other photo editing software. They don’t transfer well. Please use the tools provided. We want to be sure that you understand that we will change the fonts on the ads to match those we use in the book as well as any colored backgrounds. We want the Senior Ad section to go along with the theme of the book. We want it pretty :-). Wingspan also reserves the right to edit ads based on school policy and yearbook guidelines. We will contact you if we need to change anything drastically.
- You will get a preview of the ad before you submit, if you want to keep that preview you need to screenshot it. Unless it’s changed from last year once the preview is gone you won’t see it again until the book comes out. Unfortunately we can’t spare the time to send you another preview, there is just so much to do once January comes, I am so sorry. :-(
- If you have any questions don’t hesitate to email me.
- If your questions have to do with the site you have to contact Balfour directly at 1-800-944-5930. Again, please remember they are Pacific Standard Time (the plant is in Texas.)
I know this seems really early but we have to know how many pages you all want, to include that in the size of the book.
Yearbook Selling Period
The yearbook will go back on sale December 1-17th. That is the LAST chance to buy a yearbook.
Questions
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email Ms. Alder at salder@nsd.org, or have your student stop by room 238 and Ms. Alder will be happy to help you.

Drop Off and Pick Up: A Community Request
It's understood with COVID that families are choosing alternate ways to commute back and forth to WHS. If dropping off and/or picking up your student is part of your family's plan, please use the campus drop-off and pick-up loop to meet that need. We want to be respectful of our neighbors who live near our campus and have been asked to put out a reminder to families to please be courteous by not parking in front of driveways or mailboxes and to be careful of small children playing in the area. Thank you!

Women of Influence Club Seeking Donations for April Conference
Women of Influence Club is hosting our third annual Women of Influence Leadership Conference at the end of April. This conference will connect aspiring Woodinville High School students to influential female leaders. The conference will include a panel discussion of eight highly accomplished women in diverse occupations, followed by small round table discussions accompanied by a catered meal.
The goal of this conference is to empower young leaders by giving them an opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations with professional women in a variety of industries.
In order to stay true to our values of equity and inclusivity, and to give our attendees the best experience possible, our goal is to make this conference free of any cost.
The easiest way to sponsor is by giving a monetary donation so we can cover the cost of the conference.

Hello WHS families!
Hello WHS families! Our Pass-the-Hat Fundraiser is going on now and we want to thank you for your donations so far to this once-a-year fundraiser! If you haven’t had a chance to donate yet, please go to our website at www2.woodinvillehighschoolptsa.org or scan our QR code and donate today. All your tax-deductible donations will be used to support and enrich our school community and classrooms this year. PTSA has already received staff grant requests from almost every department at WHS totaling more than $13,000. These grants are for items that support YOUR kids in classrooms THIS YEAR. Books, art supplies, science lab support, musical equipment and counseling center supplies, just to name a few. The WHS community has been so generous in the past and we want to thank you for your continued support. Please consider PTSA’s Pass-the-Hat Fundraiser for your year-end giving, and don’t forget to check if your employer has a ‘company match’ program. Thank you!

| Attendance & Early Dismissals
Our student day is from 8:20 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. and WHS expects all students to attend school every day. Below are a few highlights of our attendance policy and procedures:
- Absences must be excused within two (2) school days of the absence or students will be assigned progressive discipline.
- Ten hours of excused and/or unexcused absences in a semester in a given class may result in going through the Attendance Validation process.
- When a student accumulates three (3) or more days of unexcused absences it will result in a conference with administration.
- If a student misses more than 15 minutes of class, it is considered an absence
- If a student requires an early dismissal, the student needs to come to the Attendance Office before school or during Options with a parent/guardian signed request. We are no longer accepting phone calls or emails for early dismissal to limit classroom interuptions.
- Students who arrive late to school (both excused and unexcused) must check in at the Attendance Office for a pass before proceeding to class.
Please refer to the WHS Website’s Attendance Page and/or the WHS Student Handbook for more details or contact the Attendance Office at 425.408.7410 or whsattendance@nsd.org.

Apply for Funds
For WHS students, contact Counselor and CARE Team member Sarah Brenner at sbrenner@nsd.org and/or your student’s school counselor or grade-level administrator to describe the temporary challenge or circumstance and request support. All NSF funding requests must come from an approved school staff member.
The NSD staff member will then submit your request.
