Hello folks,
It’s my great pleasure to introduce Map it Out, where I’m writing from the land of the Wurundjeri people. This issue is a great showcase of the breadth of cutting-edge projects and truly transformational spatial and surveying work in Victoria’s public service.
I began my journey in spatial in the early 2000s as a graduate GIS analyst in engineering consulting and as an RMIT student. As a user of the incredible suite of Vicmap GIS products and services throughout my career, it’s a great honour to join Vicmap Spatial Services and be a steward of Victoria’s long-standing and highly regarded primary mapping system.
Since I began working with spatial data and systems about almost 20 years ago, I’ve been struck by the tremendous rise and ubiquity of spatial across government and industry.
Geography has become a part of so many of the major decisions we make as individuals and organisations. It’s now more important than ever that we remain focused on maintaining the highest quality foundational spatial data as well as look at new ways to extract knowledge from the immense (and growing) amounts of geospatial data available through IOT, mobile devices and space-based sensors.
As the breadth and volume of spatial data continues to grow, so will the need for authoritative, trusted foundational data to support and anchor decisions – particularly with the adoption of AI and machine learning.
It’s such an exciting time to be working in geospatial, particularly as we embark on an important journey of transition from traditional Spatial Data Infrastructures to Geospatial Knowledge Infrastructure. Digital Cadastre Modernisation and Digital Twin Victoria are great examples of transformational projects, being delivered through government and industry collaboration, and positioning Victoria at the forefront in geospatial and digital.
Read on to learn about the public launch of Digital Twin Victoria – an immersive and dynamic platform delivering over 4,000 datasets and innovation to support the growth of smarter city and regional planning. You’ll also hear about the new Vicmap as a Service (VaaS) explorer, which is enabling our customers to access spatial data in the cloud and effortlessly integrate Vicmap into their own applications and processes.
Happy reading!
