On Tuesday, BYM's lawyer's presented oral arguments at the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals to protect our preliminary injunction in our religious freedom case against the Department of Homeland Security. Our lawyers report that overall, things went very well. We had a good panel of judges—Judge Harris (Obama), Judge Agee (G.W. Bush), and Judge Keenan (Obama). All three had a lot of questions for the government and seemed quite skeptical of their position. In contrast, they had a handful of simple questions for our attorney. Our attorney touched on our most important points, including highlighting the deep harms this policy [of allowing armed ICE agents to enter houses of worship] means for Quaker worship.
The BYM General Secretary was able to attend the hearing and hold all involved in the Light. We'll expect a decision in about four months. In the interim, our briefs on the motion for summary judgment are due in about a month.
