Isolation, solitude, wisdom...
Isolation, solitude, wisdom...
Greetings Digesters!!

The demise of the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge reminds us of T.S. Elliot's thoughts on the end of the world at the conclusion of 1925's poem The Hollow Men:
"Not with a bang / but with a whimper."

Actually, "whimper" isn't accurate. It was more like a slow-motion crashing collapse-sound. (See for yourself below.)

But you catch our drift. The bridge is no more. The new one will debut, hopefullly, Sept. 30th. Until then, one can cross the canyon via a footpath. The Library remains closed...and Sven has been sighted on the road...
"C'est la vie , Au revoir," as Robin Gibb would say...

There will be much to discuss in the coming weeks, but for the time being, we shall proceed with the Digest with two rejoinders.

First, spirits and morale remain high. The Library is still standing and we have much to look forward to. (Trust us*.)
Second, the closure has exerted a steep financial toll on our operations. Given the fact you are reading this email suggests you are already giving at least $2 a month to the cause. For that we are eternally grateful!
But should you feel compelled to give more, feel free to click here. Thanks for bearing with us...and off we go!!
Alive and Kickin' Back: Exclusive photos of the Library at rest!"
People have been wondering: Is the Library ok? What about the cats? How's the lawn?
Since "seeing is believing," Abi took it upon herself to take some shots of the "Library at rest." Click here!
It all reminds me of those first photos of the moon landing: Tranquil, mysterious, no wind, maybe a hoax, and so close yet so far! (Thanks Abs!)

"You can hear the birds...You can hear the lizards running across the road."
The LA Times spend some, err, time on La Isla Big Sur—yep, that's a Madonna shout-out—talking to locals and getting a handle on the situation. It's an interesting read.
(And while you're at it, play the "How many locals do I recognize?" game. My score was 4.5)
Picture it...New York...1956**...Henry Miller recalls and reflects...Listen and hear....
This is a rare interview conducted in New York in 1956 with Henry and his friend Ben Grauer.
Prepare for an insightful discussion about his life, his work, and what it means to live the true life of the spirit.
Checking in with a "dear, dear friend of ours,"*** the inimitable Laurie Anderson
What can you say about Laurie Anderson? Our friendship dates way back to 2005 when she headlined a benefit performance for the Library.

Earlier this month, the New York Times' Ben Sisario sat down with her to discuss, among other things, the archive of her late husband, Lou Reed, who died in 2013. Read the whole thing!
"Pamela Anderson Observes World Poetry Day with Anais Nin Instagram Caption"
Nope, that wasn't a typo.
Last but not least: Mark your calendars!
On Saturday, April 15th, ((folkYEAH!!)) presents a one-day event at The Chapel in San Francisco, featuring a lineup of local acts curated by White Fence’s Tim Presley. TICKETS HERE.
A portion of the proceeds will go to Coast Property Owners Association’s storm relief fund for Big Sur.
Till then, see you a bit further down (what's left of) the road!
