Juneteenth is an annual observance also known as Emancipation Day, Black Independence Day, or Jubilee Day. It celebrates the end of slavery in the United States in 1865. Slavery in the American South ended after the Civil War on June 19, 1865. The 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified on December 18, 1865, abolished slavery throughout the entire United States. In 2020, legislation was passed in New Jersey to observe Juneteenth as a state holiday. Learn more about Juneteenth by reviewing our University Library Resources.
