The Human Condition
Seeing anthropology as the study of the human condition—and the anthropologist’s mission as solving real-world problems through that lens—Professor of Sociology and Anthropology Andrew Gardner seeks to understand the experience of transnational labor migrants in the Gulf States of the Arabian Peninsula, where his scholarship and fieldwork are focused, and improve the system, if he can. In addition to introductory anthropology classes, he teaches courses on ethnographic methods, political ecology, transnational migration and diaspora studies, and more.

Be Prepared
Practice makes perfect or, at least, prepared. This Thursday, Sept. 17, at 10:45 a.m., we will hold our annual lockdown/shelter-in-place campuswide drill. Campus members working and learning remotely should use this opportunity to consider how you might respond in an emergency in your current location.

Make sure you can secure your working/living space quickly.
Identify safe locations away from windows and doors, and make exit strategies.
Make sure you know your physical address and can relay it over the phone if necessary.
Know the hazards (wildfires, floods, volcanic activity, etc.) in your area and plan accordingly.

In the event of an actual campus emergency, students, faculty, and staff will receive security alerts via text message to your university email addresses and/or personal cellphones. To ensure that security alerts are properly delivered, campus members should update your contact information through myPugetSound. Parents can view active security alerts on the university website.
