Leaves and Ticks

We all know that children love to play in the leaves.  There is just something so freeing about jumping into a big pile of leaves or just being buried in them.  I remember growing up, every year my Dad would go out to rake leaves.  The first thing I would do when I went outside was run and jump in his neatly constructed pile of leaves, leaving him to have to rake them again.  Of course, he didn't mind and often joined in the fun by throwing the leaves at me.
I recently heard a mother say that their children loved to play in the leaves but when they did, all she could think of was that they were probably covered in ticks.  As stated in "Tick Bites & Children", ticks love moist areas like leaves.  Always remember to check your children for ticks after playing in the leaves, woods or grass.
Be sure to look carefully at:
  • In and around hair
  • In and around ears
  • Inside belly button
  • Between legs
  • On the backs of knees
  • Under arms
Make sure to check clothing as well and it is recommended that you bath your children as soon as they return from being outside.  You can find more information and directions on tick removal here.

Fall Apple Crafts

Apple Lacing

Create a fun lacing activity for your child.
You will need:
  • Paper Plate
  • Hole Puncher
  • Red Yarn
  • Construction Paper for stem
  • Glue
  • Scissors
Begin by punching holes around the plate. Cut a long piece of yarn and tie a knot on one end.  Have your child lace through in a pattern or any way they would like.  Tie the ends of the yarn together on the back. Help your child make a stem out of construction paper and glue it to the back of the plate.

Popscicle Apple Core

You will need:
  • Jumbo popsicle Sticks (3 per craft)
  • Mini Popsicle Sticks (2 per craft)
  • Glue
  • Brown/Red/Green Cardstock
  • Black Marker
Begin by gluing the 3 jump popsicle sticks together to look like a fence.  Next glue the 2 mini popsicle sticks at the top and bottom of the fence.  Cut two halves of circles out of the cardstock to the top and bottom of the apple.  Glue them on the mini popsicle sticks. Out of the brown and green cardstock, cut out a stem and leaf and glue them on the top.  The last step is drawing "seeds" in the center using the black marker.  Let dry before displaying.

The next parent education class will be in winter 2019 at our new location.  Stay tuned for the date!
