We are planning a family trip. Melanie gave us options on the family group chat and we voted on places to stay. Only one spouse from each couple voted, because, in our family, spouses always agree with each other. Not exactly. But the ones who voted all chose the same #1 place. It takes a bigger place for us to meet than it used to. In the beginning, Melanie and I could travel light and stay in a single room. We have four couples now and soon will have five little ones. We are so glad.
When Jacob took his first big trip through Bethel to his father’s people in Harran, he went all by himself. Here as he made his last big trip, he had a caravan with carts overflowing. People and possessions traveled together to Egypt. As far as we know, the family didn’t get to vote on the destination or accommodations. They packed and traveled. From one man came a family of seventy. God had been good to Jacob.
I wonder what they learned along the way. Traveling together reveals fault lines in the family (well at least in ours!). Two of my granddaughters proclaimed themselves “twin sisters,” when they met recently. The two newest boys will be close in age as well. It is good to go together to the place God is sending us. Where is God taking your family? Where is he taking our church family? We cannot go with God and stay where we are. Let’s stay ready so that when God calls us to move, we will be able to go.
