OGS Updates and Reminders: Fall 2024

We hope your semester is off to a great start! We'd like to share some important events, reminders, and resources for the coming months. Thank you for your ongoing collaboration with our office and your dedication to supporting NYU's international scholars.

Upcoming Liaison Training Session

Navigating Employment-Based Visa Classifications in Partnership with OGS

Date: Thursday, October 24
Time: 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

We strongly encourage all administrators involved in the employment-based visa process to attend this valuable training session. We will discuss essentials of the employment-based visas, including: H-1B, E-3, O-1, and TN. Please RSVP by October 17.

Key reminders for Fall 2024:

Keep OGS Informed of Changes to an International Scholar’s Appointment

Please notify OGS of any changes to an international scholar's appointment, including:

Delayed arrival
Early departure (including resignation or termination)
Change of worksite location
Change in hours or pay
Change in job duties or title

OGS will advise on any necessary immigration-related actions based on the specific changes.

Review Visa Sponsorship Needs and Expirations within Your Department

Check your departmental records for scholars whose visa statuses will expire in the next 6 to 8 months.
Identify any new scholars, or scholars who may need to change to a different visa status.
Submit a request form to ogs.scholars@nyu.edu. OGS will review the request and initiate the next steps of the process.

Initiate Cases Within the Timelines for Visa Sponsorship Requests

Review the timelines posted on the Scholar Services Website for visa sponsorship requests.
Submit requests and documents within these timelines due to high request volumes.
While we strive to accommodate all requests, we cannot guarantee processing and approval of last-minute requests by the requested start date. In these cases, OGS will coordinate with the department on options, such as an updated reasonable start date or utilizing outside legal counsel.
Note from the Office of Academic Appointments: for Visiting Scholars, the timeline for review by the Office of Academic Appointments is four weeks, which is additional to any internal school review. Please take into account the OAA timeline in addition to OGS lead times when inviting a Visiting Scholar who may require immigration support.
