If you were looking for love, where would you go? Did you know there are apps for that? You put in your information and the app matches you with people who are possibly compatible. It wasn’t always this way. Talking with some of our couples who have been married for many, many decades, I hear a familiar story. “We met at church.” For many generations, people who loved the Lord met and married in the church.
Where did people meet to fall in love before there was a church or an app? At the well. To be fair, people and flocks alike needed water to live. Abraham’s servant met Rebekah at the well and took her home to marry Isaac. A generation later, perhaps at the same well, Jacob stopped and engaged the local shepherds in conversation. As he asked about his uncle Laban, Rachel approached the well to water her sheep. Cue the violins!
In the New Testament, we find another love story at a well. Jesus stopped in Sychar, Samaria and stayed by a well. When a Samaritan woman came at midday to get water. Jesus asked her for a drink. She asked why a Jew would talk to a Samaritan. Jesus offered her living water. The woman reminded Jesus that Jacob had drawn water from this well. Was he greater than Jacob? Then, right there at the well, a woman who had loved six men met the seventh, perfect man. She finally found the unconditional love her heart longed for. Running to her friends she said, “Come see a man . . .”
Some things never change. The love we long for is found in the Lord. The moment we meet him, we know He is the One. As Augustine prayed, “You have made us for yourself, O God. We are restless until we find rest in you.” Come to the well of life and find living water. Find the Love of your life in Jesus. He loves you no matter what. God’s love will never let you go!
