“In the 7th grade, I fell in love with the miniature wargaming hobby and have since put in countless hours painting angry toy soldiers. Of the books coming out this spring, this is the one I am most excited about.” — Ryan V.W., Powell’s Books (Portland, OR)

| Crippling Sadness and Ghostly Houseplants in the New York Times Book Review
Featured in the New York Times Book Review this weekend is Abyss by Pilar Quintana, a “spare, atomospheric novel” that’s “succintly translated” by Lisa Dillman. “[Abyss] explores Claudia’s high anxiety and the terrors of the adult world,” writes reviewer Anderson Tepper. “And there’s much for her to fear: snakes, guerrillas, loneliness, crippling sadness. Even the house plants take on a ghostly presence.” The novel—Quintana’s follow-up to The Bitch, a 2020 National Book Award finalist also translated by Dillman—will also be a NYTBR Editors’ Choice pick in the March 5 issue, and it received a starred review from Publishers Weekly.

“Illustrator Marit Tornqvist uses earth-toned watercolors and a sense of restrained humor to conjure a barnyard perplexity in The Fearless Little Farm Boy, a beguiling picture book written by Astrid Lindgren (1907-2002), author of the Pippi Longstocking series, and originally published in 1950.” — Wall Street Journal
