 2 Thessalonians 2:1-2
Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers and sisters,  not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us—whether by a prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter—asserting that the day of the Lord has already come.
New International Version (NIV)
In the Advent season we light candles and remember that we live between the first and second comings of Christ.  With Christians through the ages, we live in anticipation as we wait.

Somebody had misquoted Paul the apostle.  The church in Thessalonica heard that Christ had already returned and that they had been left out.  Paul wrote this second letter to correct their misunderstanding.

During his 1960 presidential campaign, John F. Kennedy often closed his speeches with the story of Colonel Davenport, the Speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives. One day in 1789, the sky of Hartford darkened ominously, and some of the representatives, glancing out the windows, feared the end was at hand. Quelling a clamor for immediate adjournment, Davenport rose and said, "The Day of Judgment is either approaching or it is not. If it is not, there is no cause for adjournment. If it is, I choose to be found doing my duty. Therefore, I wish that candles be brought."

Pray with me:
Gracious God, not one of your promises is “too good to be true.”  Awaken in our hearts a longing for your return.  Come quickly,  Lord Jesus, we pray.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
