Bridgeport City News | Bill Finch, Mayor
August 8, 2014

Members of the Mayor's Conservation Corps stop for a photo before hitting the streets on Wednesday afternoon.
Mayor Finch’s Conservation Corps, a program that consists of a cadre of young adults – ranging from ages 17-21 – who canvass city neighborhoods, began its sixth year this summer.
While canvassing neighborhoods in the state’s largest city, Conservation Corps members speak with residents about a number of issues, including: recycling, stormwater management via rain barrel use, tree planting, and offering the opportunity to sign up for home energy audits.
Since hitting the streets on July 22, Conservation Corps members have signed-up more than 230 households for rain barrels, nearly 140 households for energy audits, and over 35 households for Bridgeport’s Adopt-A-Tree program.
“As the father of four kids, and as the CEO of our state’s largest city, I strongly believe that there are several benefits to our summer jobs for kids program,” said Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch. “We’re teaching kids valuable skills that will help prepare them for college and to compete for 21st century jobs. We’re improving the quality of life in our city by promoting energy efficiency and clean energy use, which will help ensure our kids breathe cleaner air. And, we’re creating jobs that help make our city a better place to live, grow, and raise a family.”

"An Easy, Affordable Summer Adventure at Captain’s Cove Seaport"– FoxCT

A staple of summer fun in Bridgeport, Captain’s Cove Seaport was featured on a recent “Day Trippers” segment of Fox CT News.
Reporter, Sarah Cody, paid a visit to the seaport which offers restaurants, waterside dining, gift shops and much more.
“It’s great for anybody that doesn’t have access to get down to the water,” says Bruce Williams, whose family has worked at this marina for three generations.  “Anybody can come down, spend a day on the water, watch a tug boat go by, have a sandwich on the dock or go fishing.”
"In Bridgeport, as we work hard to develop more of our beautiful waterfront property, we look at Captain’s Cove as a model for success that has stood the test of time," said Mayor Bill Finch, who frequently visits Captain’s Cove and recently awarded the Seaport’s founder Kaye Williams with a proclamation. "It's a thriving job creator that draws in thousands of people from across the state to the Park City every year. My wife and kids love it. We're regulars. And, we encourage everyone to come and see Captains Cove and all that our state's largest city has to offer."

For the third consecutive summer, downtown Bridgeport is host to a Connecticut Free Shakespeare production. Running through Sunday, August 10 (weather permitting),  "As You Like It" will be performed on the outdoor stage at historic McLevy Green.
“Downtown Bridgeport is being revitalized and becoming a cultural hub,” said Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch. “Connecticut Free Shakespeare is another great event that draws in large crowds from throughout Bridgeport and surrounding towns to the hear of our downtown. Thank you to Ellen Lieberman, Bert Garskof, the cast, the staff and the interns for all of their hard work in creating such an impressive production.”
Performances, which are free and open to the public, begin at 8:00 pm, but attendees are encouraged to arrive early to get the most advantageous viewing spots. Those attending should bring blankets or chairs for seating. Picnicking is traditional. Actors are courtesy of Actors’ Equity Association.
“For these years, when tens of thousands of Bridgeport and area residents enjoyed Shakespeare, Mayor Finch has lent his support, making this all possible  The move to McLevy was Mayor Finch’s idea. Downtown Bridgeport is becoming the place to be and he saw how CFS would add to downtown’s growth. CFS is delighted with the move. Mayor Finch’s vision and support keeps CFS in the game and it is a pleasure to be there,” said Executive Producer Bert Garskof.

Connecticut Free Shakespeare Presents:
As You Like It
This Weekend
8 p.m.
McLevy Green

This adaptation, by Artistic Director, Ellen Lieberman, is "As You Like It" as you’ve never seen it. While true to Shakespeare’s 400-year-old language and intent, the action takes place in 1968. As with many of Shakespeare’s comedies, the plot involves feuding, disguised lovers and misplaced love, resulting in a great deal of hilarity.
This is the company’s 15th season, and audiences keep growing. Actors are courtesy of Actor’s Equity.
Attendees should bring blankets or chairs for seating. It’s traditional to come an hour or two early and picnic. FREE. Performances are cancelled only when weather is severe.
