Intern Farewell for Newsletter
Hello 4-H Families!
I’m sad to say that last week was my final week as the 4-H Summer Intern. I’ve had such a fun summer planning and running all the day camps! This summer has gone by so quickly, but I’m so grateful for this opportunity. I will give a small overview of what I did this summer:
To kick start the full summer of camps, the first one was Foodie camp in June! Foodie camp was 3 days of all things cooking and baking! Youth made a wide variety of foods from desserts, main courses, and healthy snacks!
Next, in the beginning of August was Art Camp! Art Camp had 3 different themed days that were Art-Rageous 2-D, Super Sculptures 3-D, and Creative Cultural Arts! Youth did things such as chalk and oil pastels, made pipe cleaner flowers, and dreamcatchers!
The last camps of the summer were Cardboard Camp and LEGO Camp. During Cardboard Camp youth created all things transportation including cars, boats, and rockets! LEGO Camp was a small glimpse into what youth do during the year at LEGO Club. At LEGO Camp youth did build challenges, build cars, learned techniques, and so much more!
All throughout the summer we had 3 different themed Cloverbud Day Camps for those youth in grades Kindergarten through 2nd. The first theme was Fun on the Farm where youth learned all about farm animals! The second day camp was Out of this World where youth did lots of space themed activities and learned about space. The third and final Cloverbud Day Camp was Outdoor Survival where youth did a scavenger hunt, made solar ovens, learned the cardinal directions, and more!
I planned and ran all of those day camps and they were so much fun! A few other things I did this summer include writing press releases for the day camps, going to National Night Out, and running the action center at the fair! At National Night Out, we had a booth to promote 4-H and I made buttons and straw rockets with the kids! At the fair, we had a booth with lots of promotional items as well and a different activity each day for the kids to do! There were a lot of families who were interested in joining LEGO Club and 4-H!
Overall, I had an amazing summer and thank you all so much for this wonderful opportunity!
Sincerely,
Makayla Stommel
Fond du Lac County 4-H Summer Intern

Outdoor Survival Day CampOn August 13th, we wrapped up our final Cloverbud Day Camp of the year, Outdoor Survival! Campers explored nature, learned about cardinal directions, and cooked treats in solar ovens.
We kicked off the day with some fun, nature-themed icebreaker questions before diving into the first activity, making binoculars out of paper tubes for the outdoor scavenger hunt. Equipped with their new binoculars, campers headed outside to search for natural treasures and learned how to use compasses to find north, south, east, and west
After lunch, the group sang camp songs, completed an obstacle course, and worked together in a team-building challenge. Back inside, campers got creative building solar ovens from recycled boxes lined with tin foil and covered with plastic wrap. They placed s’mores inside to bake in the sun for their snack later in the day.
We had a special visit from the 2025 Fond du Lac County Fairest of the Fair, Maya Wiltzius, who shared about her role, answered lots of questions, and joined in on afternoon activities. Campers then made bird feeders using pinecones, peanut butter, and bird seed, and created beautiful leaf rubbings with leaves collected earlier in the day.
To close out the camp, we enjoyed our freshly melted s’mores and presented the Camper of the Week Award to Hattie F. Congratulations, Hattie!
We’re already looking forward to next summer’s Cloverbud Day Camps. Stay tuned for more details!
