Seasonal Shifts & Celebrations

Happy autumn greetings!

We had a blast bidding farewell to summer and welcoming fall at our recent Community Garden Party and Artist Reception at the Eastside Community Garden.  Thank you to all who came out to help us celebrate local food, community, and art!  Huge shout out, too, to the many volunteers who helped lead garden tours, provided live music, and shared activities for kids of all ages.  Special thanks also goes to Jackie O’s, Casa Nueva, Rural Action, Bodhi Tree, COMCorps members, and Chef Dane Salabak’s Dietetics and Nutrition students for their delicious contributions to our refreshments table.  If you haven’t had a chance to stop by the Eastside garden to see the new Passion Works shed mural yet, be sure to do so.  It’s gorgeous and we’d even say it’s a great photo opp!

Completion of the mural on site was made possible with the help of community volunteers and an awesome solar-powered generator contributed by Appalachian Renewable Power (ARP Solar) and the Sustainable Ohio Public Energy Council, which enabled use of a projector at the park.  The party and mural project were supported by the Arts Midwest GIG Fund, a program of Arts Midwest that is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional contributions from the Ohio Arts Council.

We’re energized by these cool mornings and evenings with lingering summer warmth in between, and by the shift in seasonal produce from gardens and farms.  We’re always delighted to hear from you; tell us, how was your summer?  What recipes did you discover?  What garden tips did you discover? Send us a note

With gratitude,
The CFI team
September Favorites
September was packed!  Below you’ll find some of our favorite photos from the past month’s events.
Garden Celebration and Artist Reception
We can’t say enough about how lovely the Community Garden Party and Artist Reception was.  Thank you to the many, many hands that made this event a wonderful celebration!  Love this community.
Community Distribution at Job and Family Services
We had a great turnout for our recent community distribution at Job and Family Services!  Thank you to Athens County Food Pantry and Athens County Job and Family Services for partnering on this event, and to all the volunteers who came out to help.
Pawpaw Festival, 2022
It was so fun to be back at Pawpaw this year!  Shout out to Molly Gassaway for organizing a super fun kids craft.
Veggie Van in Nelsonville
The Veggie Van farmstand made two special stops in Nelsonville in September thanks to community partners at the HIVE and Rocky Boots.  In mid-September Ivan and dietetics intern Kari Saunders participated in Wellness Week at Rocky Boots; the following week Ivan and Sam took the Veggie Van farmstand to the HIVE where HIVE kids had a chance to "shop" with Veggie Van bucks.
Share the Harvest at Kindred Market!
CFI is the Common Cents recipient at Kindred Market for the October to December quarter!  Stop by Kindred, support a local business, and show CFI a little love when you check out!
What Else?
Donation Station is at the Athens Farmers Market  every Wednesday and Saturday, and we happily accept produce from your home garden or produce purchased at market!
There's always more happening at CFI than we have room to share here.  Be sure to follow us on social media: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter
