Next Generation of Agriculture

Agri-View is featuring the Next Generation of Agriculture in photos. Seniors who graduated in 2020 are our priority but we will feature photos of anyone still in school or having just graduated from school who is involved in the agricultural industry.

Please email photos as jpg attachments to agriview@madison.com and include the student’s name, whether he or she lives on a farm, what generation the farm is, information about the family if desired, what the student is involved in and the student’s future plans. Photos should be at least .3M or 300k in size.

Also any 4-H leader who would like a subscription to Agri-View to use with 4-H members should email agriview@madison.com with the request. Include name, address, phone, 4-H club name, and farm or school information of the leader.
Awards and Educational Experiences

Citizenship, Leadership, & 4-H Growth Achievement Awards

Citizenship, Leadership, and 4-H Growth Achievement awards may be earned by members who have completed ninth grade or above. Members may either be self-nominated or nominated by their leader. If you have had leadership roles (club, project or at the county or state level) or show a positive attitude, involvement, and growth in projects and in activities you should apply. Applications are due to the Extension Office by September 15.  Forms are available on the web at https://fonddulac.extension.wisc.edu/4h/awards-scholarships/

Community Service Awards for Clubs and Individuals

Service to the community is a fundamental principle of 4-H. We will recognize individual youth and clubs who have taken leadership in 4-H community service efforts. Up to two youth in grades 5 - 8 and up to two youth in grades 9 – 12. Recognition will be given in 2 categories: large and small clubs. Top placing clubs will have funds donated by the Fond du Lac County 4-H Leader Association in their club’s name, to the agency for which the club did community service. Applications are due to the Extension Office by September 15.

Apply for 2021 4-H Conferences, National Events, Travel Experiences, and Key Award

In order to be eligible for awards and/or to receive funding for educational travel experiences through the Fond du Lac County Adult Leaders Association, you must turn in a completed application by September 15 and interview September 22 or 26. You can find the application at  https://fonddulac.extension.wisc.edu/4h/travel-experiences-a/.   Applying for funding does not guarantee you a spot on the educational travel experience. Also, any 4-H member can register for an educational travel experience regardless if they’ve received partial funding or not. It is unknown at this time how and when educational travel experiences will be offered. Updates will be communicated for the 2021 experiences as they become available.

Fond du Lac County Youth Awarded Outstanding Dairy Youth Exhibitor Award

Mess siblings named 2020 Outstanding Dairy Youth Exhibitors

Kaylee and Sam Mess, Rosendale, have recently been awarded the 2020 Fond du Lac County Project Outstanding Dairy Youth Exhibitor Award. The annual award is based on the dairy youth activities, leadership, teaching responsibilities, and awards and accomplishments of the recipient.

Kaylee Mess is the recipient of the Senior Outstanding Dairy Youth Exhibitor. Seventeen-year-old Mess takes an active role on her family’s 110-cow dairy operation, where she manages the pre-weaned calves and assists with milking and record keeping. Mess is a recent graduate of Laconia High School and has been in the dairy project for ten years. She is a member of the Laconia FFA, serving as president of the chapter and achieving her State FFA degree in 2020. She also serves as vice-president of both the Fond du Lac County Jr Holstein Association and the Fond du Lac County Youth Dairy Committee. This fall, Mess will be attending UW-Platteville to study Agricultural Education to become a teacher and carry on the tradition of growing great leaders through FFA and agricultural classes.

Fifteen-year-old Sam Mess is the Junior Outstanding Dairy Youth Exhibitor award winner. He has been in the dairy project for eight years. On the family farm he helps with milking and mixing feed for the cows and heifers. Mess is an active member of the Fond du Lac County Dairy Project and Jr Holstein Associations, and Laconia FFA where he serves as vice-president. He plans on attending either an agriculture technical college program or UW Farm and Industry Short Course once he graduates and return to the family farm.
