March 3, 2023
Greetings, Everyone
And here we are, having made it through the worst of winter (though I hope that statement doesn’t curse us like the groundhog did this year). After our much needed spring break, we look forward to diving full tilt into musical, concert, recital and capstone showcase season. This begins the process of closing out a banner academic year in which we re-opened our events fully to the public, concluded the research and reflection period of our Departmental Academic Program Review, fully welcomed several new DFPA community members, and said goodbye to some.
For sure, we’re still shaking the bugs from old systems and making room for new ones—spring cleaning, anyone?—and getting our “house” in order. Our house has curricula, faculty, staff, students, and ART on display in multiple “houses” on campus and beyond. As we “shake the house” like a 3000 year old Persian spring tradition called khaneh tekani, we will not only clean up our space, but be blessed with good fortune in the upcoming year. So, let’s envision the month of March as our graceful climb to the top of our work this year in anticipation of an energetic slide towards graduation and the summer.

Magis Faculty Leadership Program Applications are now open for the third faculty cohort of the Magis Faculty Leadership Program. The application deadline is Monday, April 10.
“Magis” is a key Jesuit value that means striving for excellence, striving to carry out our purpose, striving to work for the betterment of self, others, and our society. In that spirit, the Magis Faculty Leadership program serves to develop the next generation of servant leaders at Loyola University Chicago. The program will provide professional development opportunities for full-time faculty who are interested in exploring campus administration and leadership. Faculty will attend regular workshops and participate in activities led by University administrators to learn about the many roles of faculty leaders, to understand the meaning of leadership in a Jesuit context, and to have an opportunity to assess their interest in pursuing opportunities in academic administration.
For their participation in the program, Magis fellows will receive an administrative stipend of $2,500 and a certificate of completion. Accepted faculty must attend all sessions to receive the stipend and certificate. To learn more and apply, please visit the Magis Faculty Leadership web page.

Enterprise Learning Hub
We'd like to encourage all Faculty and Staff, as part of your pre-semester preparation, to check in at the Enterprise Learning Hub, where lives access to any of the required online training sessions about which we often receive reminders or announcements. We ask you to keep up with those required sessions, and complete them in timely fashion so we don’t have to track you down (knowing that the ultimate penalty for non-compliance is removal from email and university systems). I hope we will be able to continue to benefit from the information we get from these relatively painless obligations.

Ralph Arnold Gallery Free General Admission
INVISIBLE ARCHITECTURE is an exhibition of paintings and sculptures by six artists whose works evoke a meditative response through the interaction between form and fluidity. Within the geometric architecture of a painting, painters Ian Miyamura and Hasani Sahlehe search for ways to break down boundaries and suggest a dissolving state of perception. Similarly, Alessandra Norman airbrushes soft paint onto rigid CNC-routed panels, collapsing the distance between the exterior natural landscape and the interior architecture of windows and fences. Jaclyn Mednicov and Salvador Dominguez use mold making processes to re-present quotidian forms into new interpretations that reveal the atmospheric residue of the objects and suggest the passing of time. Sonya Bogdanova creates heavy and tender ceramic clouds, placed in domestic spaces to address the spiritual weight of working toward the American dream. The works act as symbols for the body to address the transient state of our perceptions, and make us aware of dissolving boundaries within ourselves.

Room Usage Guidelines
With the large number of shared academic spaces in the DFPA it is especially important that we all contribute to their upkeep. To that end, please comply with the following Room Usage Guidelines. These guidelines and standard layouts are posted on the wall in most of our shared academic spaces.
- Use only dry erase markers on the whiteboards.
-
Clean up the room, including the whiteboards. Place all trash in receptacles, food and drink containers should be put in the main hallway receptacles.
- Do not add/remove furniture or equipment to/from the room without permission. A room inventory is posted in most shared academic spaces.
-
Rearranging furniture and equipment within the room is permissible, but the room should be returned to its standard layout at the end of use. A standard layout is posted in most of our shared academic spaces.
- Room schedules are posted outside most of our shared academic spaces. Please vacate the space in a timely fashion in order for subsequent events to begin on time.
-
If a piano is present, do not set anything on the piano; keep liquids away from the piano; and do not unplug the piano from the wall socket.
- Food is not permitted in Music Studios or Practice Rooms.
