On the Butterfly Highway

I’m starting to see monarch butterflies pass through my garden on their journey south for the winter. Each autumn, millions of monarchs leave their summer homes, traveling up to 3,000 to overwintering sites in Mexico. As a college student studying abroad, I was lucky enough to visit two of these sites in Michoacán, Mexico. Seeing giant fir trees so dense with monarchs that their limbs bent toward the ground was an awe-inspiring sight. Twenty years later, I find myself living near a major monarch flyway. Some days I count hundreds of butterflies passing through my garden.
Migrating monarchs generally pass through the Southeastern states from mid to late October. You can help fuel their migration by planting plenty of nectar-rich shrubs and perennials. Monarchs and other butterflies also need places to rest in the garden. Dense shrubs like Oakland™ Holly and Snow Joey™ Viburnum provide shelter from wind and rain. Fall is a great time to plant shrubs in the garden. In small gardens, these container recipes for sun and shade provide the perfect combination of autumn beauty and sweet nectar.
