Break out of the darkness with the Portland Winter Light Festival
|
Starting this Friday night, Portland transforms into the city of lights through the annual Portland Winter Light Festival —
and it’s FREE! This year’s festival runs through the next two weekends and features more than 160 lighted art installations, including a light projection at the Simon Benson House on the PSU campus.
Here’s what you need to know:
|
- There are three anchor sites: Pioneer Courthouse Square, World Trade Center, and The Electric Blocks.
-
Anchor sites are open the next two Fridays and Saturdays, Feb. 2-3 and Feb. 9-10, from 6 to 10 p.m.
- Anchor sites feature live performances, large-scale interactive installations and pop-up retail shops.
- Pop-up locations throughout the city (including at PSU) will be open most nights from Feb. 2-10.
-
Plan to take the Portland Streetcar to the festival — it is free with your PSU ID —and will run until 11:30 p.m. on festival days.

Act now to cash in on scholarships and financial aid for 2024-25 |
PSU strongly recommends submitting your FAFSA form before this Thursday, Feb. 1. This year, the federal government launched a new, easier-to-use form to apply for financial aid.
The FAFSA is for students applying for need-based aid (like the Pell Grant) and non-need-based aid (student loans). Need to know more? Read about the FAFSA process and who should apply in FAFSA Myths Busted, a helpful guide from the enrollment experts at PSU.
In addition to FAFSA, you should definitely
check out Scholarship Universe
, PSU’s portal to millions of dollars in scholarships available each year! If you’re feeling overwhelmed by it all, read Scholarships Through PSU on the Inside Portland State blog, a step-by-step guide to getting the most out of Scholarship Universe.
FAFSA and Scholarship Universe are both open NOW for the 2024-25 academic year. The deadline to apply for scholarships is April 1.

Don’t sleep on this opportunity to influence PSU’s future
|
What do YOU want from PSU? The university is seeking more students to participate in the Strategic Planning process by participating in upcoming forums and
taking the Heart of PSU survey. Help shape programs and set priorities so PSU can meet the aspirations of its students now and for years to come. In order to be a reflection of the PSU community, student participation is essential — bring a friend or arrange for your entire campus group to attend. The plan will be finalized in June.

Nominations for Building Community task force due Wednesday |
The Building Community Through Dialogue Task Force, launched by PSU President Ann Cudd in response to divisiveness regarding the conflict in the Middle East, is being restructured in response to community input from the initial announcement. In her Jan. 21 blog post, How a Task Force Can Build Community, President Cudd explains that the primary goal of the task force is to foster a safe community where lived experiences are acknowledged and where constructive conversations can occur, even when in disagreement. As a result of the delayed launch, the deadline for nominations to the task force is this Wednesday, Jan. 31. You may nominate yourself or someone else to join the task force.
