What ever happened to life-savers candy? This surely dates me, but I remember when they came in little rolls wrapped in a layer of wax covered by a layer of foil with a colorful outer wrapper. I opened the life-savers by pulling the little green string. Red touched green touched yellow touched orange. Somewhere along the way, the manufacturers moved to larger bags filled with little wrappers containing an individual life-saver. Mostly we see them in the form of mints these days.
This change in candy wrappers mirrors a transition in our culture. We have moved from a community mindset where people shared life together and depended on each other to a more isolated, insular culture where people often live lonely lives. Sociologist Robert Putnam described it in his book called Bowling Alone. Not that I am opposed to solitude, but Bonhoeffer was right in advocating spiritual community.
As we continue to focus on relationships at Tallowood, I wonder where you are finding relationships in this community. Is it in Sunday School classes, or in ministries like the choir or orchestra? Where do you share life with others? Who offers you unconditional acceptance and loving accountability? Watching our choir and our worship team each weekend reminds me that life is lived better in ensemble. Together we do more than any one of us could do.
Especially, I am interested in the way the Holy Spirit is shaping us in community at Tallowood. This is what I am studying in my own time alone and discussing with our worship planning group and staff. If you have stories of ways that community has ministered to you at Tallowood, please pass them on to me in e-mail form. Your story is part of our story. We need to hear the stories of relationship development as we become a Spiritual Community, a church filled with God's Spirit on mission together. That is why I describe Tallowood as a life-giving church. If we get better at this, for some, we may become a life-saving community.
Joyfully,
Duane
