Titus 1:1-2
Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ to further the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness— in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time.
New International Version (NIV)
Every Fall, the Bridge Inn in Holmrook England hosts the World’s Biggest Liar competition. Entrants are given five minutes in the spotlight to tell the biggest and most convincing whopper they can muster.  Politicians and lawyers are banned from the contest because they are "too well versed to apply."

As a boy I heard tales about George Washington saying, “I cannot tell a lie.”  Most of us can and do.  In the first century, the people on the Island of Crete had taken prevarication to a whole new level.  Even their own poets like Epimenides said, “Cretans are always liars.”

Paul left Titus in Crete to appoint elders in every town.  Even in the first lines of the letter Paul speaks of the knowledge of the truth.  Then he points to God “Who cannot lie.”  In a truth-challenged world, it is sometimes hard to know whom to believe.  Good news:  we can always believe God because, unlike us, he cannot lie.  He is the biggest truth-teller in the world!

Why can’t God lie?  Truth is not just his character but his identity.  For God to lie, he would have to deny himself.  At his invitation, all of us, even the politicians, can come to Jesus, the Way, the Truth and the Life.  He wants all to trust in him and be saved.  No lie!

Pray with me:
Father, when we need to know the truth we turn to you, the Truth.  You tell us the whole truth and nothing but the truth.  Help us who often stretch the truth to speak the truth in love.  Let your truth transform us as we trust you today.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen!
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
