October 2015
Dear Charter School Supporter,
Our annual Louisiana Charter Schools Conference has come and gone -- and it was a great event! Thank you so much to those of you who joined us in Baton Rouge, along with our partners and sponsors who helped make the event possible. I hope that the time you spent with us in Baton Rouge was helpful to your work and moving the charter school movement in Louisiana forward. I want to give a special shout out to the 2015 Louisiana Charter School Excellence Award winners, announced at our welcome reception the night before the conference. To read more about the awards and the winners, please click here.
During my remarks to attendees at the conference, we held an informal poll about the upcoming gubernatorial elections and a few other education issues. Our conversation during this time showed me that there is a real information gap in the charter community about candidates and their stance on public education issues. The upcoming October primary (THIS Saturday!) is critical for all of us in the charter community and in education at large, as the races for Governor and the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) will likely be close.
LAPCS is currently in the process of setting up a c4 organization so that we can provide even more information on upcoming elections and candidates, and directly endorse candidates who we believe support charter schools and parental choice. In the meantime, we've prepared an informational candidate listing for the two races to help you learn more about your options. No matter your stance, we encourage you to get out the word about the upcoming elections to your networks and make sure everyone votes on Saturday, October 24.
Caroline Roemer
Executive Director, LAPCS
