Another New Librarian, New Titles, and More!

Welcome back to another edition of the Medical Library Newsletter. We've had a bit of a hiatus but have returned to bring you the latest updates on all the happenings of the Medical Library here at OUWB.
This month's newletter features:

Library Hours and Housekeeping

O'Dowd and Medical Library Construction
We want to remind students and faculty again that should your study spots become unavailable due to the construction happening at O'Dowd during the month of August, that there is space both in the Medical Library Collaborative and Quiet Study Spaces, as well as on the third and fourth floor of Kresge Library. Additionally, students living in Royal Oak or Troy locales can access the Corewell campus study spaces.
In addition to the O'Dowd construction, the Medical Library will be undergoing some lighter construction in both its office, in the Quiet Study Space, and in the Individual Study Rooms. This should begin with the office spaces in mid-August and at the start of September migrate to the study spaces. We apologize for the inconvenience, but we are committed to creating better spaces for our students, and this renovation goes towards that effort!
Library Building Hours
Library hours will remain the same throughout July and August. A gentle reminder to be cooperative and patient with Kresge Library staff - particularly when they ask are asking students to vacate the building at closing time.
  • Monday - Thursday: 7:30a - 11:00p
  • Friday: 7:30a - 8:00p
  • Saturday - Sunday: 10:00a - 6:00p

Another New Medical Librarian at OUWB!

The Medical Library is please to welcome Ms. Michelle Rau to the team! Michelle joined Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor and Medical Librarian in June 2023. She brings over fifteen years of work experience in education and hospital health sciences libraries.

Michelle received her Masters of Library and Information Science from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan where she specialized in Health Informatics. In her spare time Michelle enjoys live music, cycling, tennis, golf, poker, and traveling. She loves hiking through Muir Woods and hopes to one day visit the Maldives.
We are incredibly pleased and excited to have Michelle join the team. Her wealth of experience and her obvious passion for health informatics will be a great asset to OUWB and to the Medical Library. Welcome, Michelle!

Zotero and Citation Management

You may have noticed, had you tried to use RefWorks recently, that Kresge Library has discontinued its support for the citation manager. This decision was made due to budget cuts and the plethora of free options available. The library eventually decided to offer support for one of those citation managers in particular - Zotero. Zotero is free with a premium option, meaning you can choose to purchase additional storage on their platform, and is supported by many universities the world over. It offers robust options, is cloud-based, and is simple to use.
The Medical Library has put together a guide on how to use Zotero, as well as some tips and tricks that might not be so obvious. For instance, you can install a browser plugin for Zotero that allows you to adds articles to your citation manager directly from a webpage. You an also integrate Zotero into Microsoft Word, which allows you to cite sources as you're writing.
If you have further questions about Zotero, please do not hesitate to contact the Medical Library. We will also be offering a Lunch and Learn in the fall featuring the program and the best ways to integrate it into your work. Watch this space for more information soon!
