Partial (Selective) Retroactive Withdrawal Guide |
We’re seeking your help in guiding students on whether petitioning for a selective retroactive withdrawal is advisable.
The two most important things to remember:
- Students must be able to distinguish specifically why they were able to be successful in other courses vs. this one.
- Students must have documentation to support this.
This exception is generally considered in the following circumstances:
- Course structure was different than others, such as; there was only a final exam, it was asynchronous, a short course that was completed before the situation, or attendance was a significant part of the grade.
- Other instructors provided accommodations such as; an option for incomplete, acceptance of late work, or deadline extensions.
An exception is generally not considered for the following:
-
Expressing need to change grade to help GPA
- Change in major and no longer needs course
- Focused on other courses more
- This subject is more difficult for student
- Wanted to try to catch up and finish but couldn't

The College does not hold a College-wide ceremony in May. All College graduates from Summer 2024, Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 are eligible to participate in the 2025 KU Commencement on May 18th.
The School of the Arts and some departments hold recognition events. Students should connect with them directly for more information.
