Preventing Future Weed Infestations By Managing Drown Out Areas
The 2024 growing season provided our crops in most of Wisconsin with plenty of water. In spots, too much! Some areas were re-planted. Other areas, have troublesome weeds quickly escaping and will likely produce plenty of seed before a killing frost occurs. It might be tempting to run through these areas with a combine to “clean up” the weeds but you'll want to think about the long term effect.

Calibrate Yield Monitors Today for Better Data Tomorrow
A powerful farm tool is a well-calibrated yield monitor. Typically installed on harvesters and combines, the technology uses GPS and sensors to measure and record crop yield, moisture levels, and other metrics in real time by location in field. Yield monitors have not changed much since the mid-1990s yet remain a reliable component of on-farm data when calibrated before harvest each season. Are your yield monitors calibrated and ready for harvest season?

Field Notes Episode 20: An Economist’s Take on the Dollars & Sense of Conservation Agriculture
Much time has been spent on the environmental benefits of conservation agriculture. But, do practices like reduced tillage and cover crops pencil out for farmers, and how do we figure that out? In the second episode of this two-fer on the economics of conservation, we talk with Jake Kaderly, who works as a crop consultant under the name Kaderly Ag and farms 330 acres in Green County, for the farmer’s take on how he pencils out conservation practices.
