“Good teaching cannot be reduced to technique; good teaching comes from the identity and integrity of the teacher.”
― Parker Palmer, The Courage to Teach: Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacher's Life

For about 30% of our families, this is your first experience with a Friends school, so I want to begin by saying that you do not need to know all the language or traditions right away. Quaker education grew from the belief, championed by George Fox, that there is something of God, or an Inner Light, in every person. William Penn helped bring those ideas into public life, and his vision contributed to the founding of Penn Charter School in 1689. From the beginning, Quaker education has connected strong academics with reflection, character, community, and a responsibility to make the world better.

Dominican Republic Interest Meeting |
For 9 years (2014-2019, 2024-2026) a group of middle school students and teacher trip leaders have taken a week-long trip to the Dominican Republic to participate in schools as a learning exchange. While there, travelers participate in service learning as well as practice Spanish and explore the country. Feel free to check out the running blog that spans the years of the FSW DR Trips.
We will have an after school meeting on Wednesday, August 26th from 3:15-3:45pm in the Spanish room for interested 7th & 8th grade students and families.
This year, the Dominican Republic international trip is scheduled for January 23-29 of 2027.
Timeline:
Applications will be available by early next week (in Ethan Hall hallway). Students must show responsibility, emotional readiness, open communication, and be in good academic standing. We want to help make this additional trip accessible for families, so please be in touch with Marla if you are hoping for support and have a flexible tuition plan.
Applications are due Tuesday, September 8th.
