Opioids and College-Age Youth
Prescription opioid misuse is national crisis costing thousands of lives and billions of dollars a year. Oregon has the second highest rate of nonmedical use in the country. A new study has found that college-age youth don't understand the severity of these dangerous drugs, and worse yet, can easily get them:
  • Almost 16 percent said they have used pain pills not prescribed to them at some point in their lifetime
  • Young adults say opioids are easy to get
33% say prescription pain pills are "easy" to acquire, and 50% saying they could get them within 24 hours. The easiest source: parent's or friend's medicine cabinets.
  • Despite some knowledge of danger around prescription pain medication, many young people do not realize how similar such medications are to heroin
86.6% know certain pain medications are addictive, but almost 60%
said they thought prescription pain medicine like oxycontin, which is simply the lab equivalent of heroin, was less risky. In addition, 11% said they have taken a pill without knowing what it was.
"Where There’s Life, There’s Hope"
We always love it when De Paul alumni come visit and check in with us. Last week Cynthia Corder was visiting family in Portland and asked if she could come tell her inspiring story on our women’s floor.  Cynthia has been sober for 15 years now and told the group, “I don’t know where I would be without De Paul.”  She even brought her graduation certificate to share with the group. Thank you Cynthia for bringing hope to our clients!
