Mary sits and contemplates Jesus
and she is praised for doing so.
We, too, are expected to contemplate God—
• to consider the world in all
its intricate parts,
its utterly regular and predictable functions;
• to look on its morning fresh beauty,
the breathtaking majesty
of a redwood, for instance;
• to see in all this
the power and greatness of the Creator.
It is said that we cannot see God,
face-to-face.
And that is true.
But we can catch a glimpse
of the hem of God's garment, so to speak,
in the splendor and magnitude
of God's creation.
