Learning about our Surrounding Communities
A question we often get from Bucknellians is “What can I do to engage with our community?” Our first response is usually “Learn more about it!”. We are lucky to live in the Susquehanna Valley, near the beautiful Susquehanna RIver with access to nature, history, culture and more! We generally partner with the SUN (Snyder, Union, Northumberland counties) region, working to support community-identified priorities. Our Community Engaged Learning website is a great place to start learning about our communities.
Our region is full of assets, strengths and challenges. Learning about the history of our place is a good first step in building our understanding of where we are located. There are many assumptions and perceptions about what it’s like to live in central PA. Our hope is that through intentional, thoughtful community engagement we work to break down these assumptions and together build mutually respectful and beneficial relationships.
Do you know about ALICE? ALICE means Asset-Limited, Income-Constricted, Employed, referring to a population of folks who earn more than the federal poverty level, but less than the basic cost of living for the county. In 2018, 29% of households in Northumberland county fell into the ALICE threshold. See the ALICE reports for more information.
Did you know that PA’s “....population has become increasingly racially diverse?”. Did you know that in 2019 ¼ of Pennsyavinals were under the age of 20 and ⅓ were 55 and older? Check out The State of Our Health: A Statewide Health Assessment of PA, 2022 on our website under the Understanding Our Surrounding Communities Tab.
You can also find an archive of all of our CEL Newsletters here.
Please check out our website and feel free to reach out if you have ideas of what we can add so that we can all continue to learn about our unique and amazing communities in the Susquehanna Valley!
