Greetings alumni, 
We hope that this new school year is off to a great start!
This past summer we provided travel opportunities to over 450 DC Public School students. Take a look at their trip blogs and check out our Twitter and Instagram for fun photos and anecdotes from your fellow travelers. 
Our team is now gearing up for next summer's program and the student application will open on October 15th. As alumni of the program, we encourage you to get involved with recruiting new travelers at your school. Reach out to your school's Travel Ambassador to see if you can help with any meetings. Visit classrooms throughout the day and share about your experiences in the program. Present your Making Global Local project to your school community. There are lots of ways to get involved! Be sure to read more about this year's application so you can share with your classmates.  
A student author for the Wilson High School Beacon wrote a piece on DCPS Study Abroad, featuring students Sierra J. who traveled to China and Julia A. who visited Ecuador. Check out the article here

Reischauer Scholars Program (RSP) at Stanford
This online course for HS students is offered by Stanford University's Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education (SPICE). The RSP annually selects up to 30 exceptional students from across the US to engage in intensive study of Japan, with a special focus on the US-Japan relationship. Students hear from experts in the field, and interact with Japanese high school students. Students must attend 10 "virtual classes," complete weekly assignments, an independent research project, and community presentations. Those who complete the course will earn Stanford Continuing Studies Program (CSP) credit and a Certificate of Completion from SPICE, Stanford University. Tuition waivers are available. Learn more

Global Ties U.S. Conference
Students are invited to present their research at Global Ties' annual conference in DC. Students are invited to submit an entry for their Poster Session, which is an opportunity for academics and emerging scholars researching topics in public diplomacy, international affairs, and other globally-focused issues. Study a Language Abroad Scholarship
NSLIY (National Security Language Initiative for Youth) is a U.S. State Department foreign language program. Selected students study a less commonly taught language overseas for a summer (even current high school seniors are eligible for this) or for a semester or entire school year. Students can study Arabic in Jordan or Morocco, Mandarin Chinese in China or Taiwan, Hindi in India, Bahasa in Indonesia, Korean in South Korea, Persian/Tajik in Tajikistan, Russian in Estonia, Latvia, Moldova, or Russia, and Turkish in Turkey. Experience Muslim Culture Abroad
The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange & Study (YES) Abroad program is another U.S. government program focused on experiencing Muslim culture first-hand. Students spend an academic year living with a host family in a country with a significant Muslim population  in Europe, Asia or Africa. Deadline for 2018-19 academic year is Oct. 30th. Learn more

Arabic Children's Story Contest
Children aged 10-15 are invited to participate in the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center's story contest. Students are asked to write a short story addressing the prompt, "If I were to visit Oman, I would..." Learn more about this contest

Operation Understanding DC
OUDC's mission is to build a generation of African American and Jewish community leaders who promote respect, understanding, and cooperation while working to eradicate racism, anti-Semitism and all forms of discrimination. Each fall OUDC selects African American and Jewish juniors from DC area schools to take part in this one-year (Jan-Dec) leadership program. Students learn about their respective histories and cultures, take part in a 3-week summer travel program to sites of historic interest to African Americans and Jews, and return the following fall for leadership training and to lead diversity seminars. High School Diplomats (HSD) at Princeton
HSD US is a fully funded 10-day summer program at Princeton University that provides 40 American HS students the opportunity to engage in academic, cultural, and social pursuits, and to forge lifelong friendships with 40 Japanese students of the same age. During the program at Princeton, each American student is paired with a Japanese roommate. Those American students who successfully complete HSD US are eligible to apply for a full scholarship to travel to Japan for a month the following summer. Only sophomores and juniors are eligible to apply. Learn more and apply online

Citizen Diplomacy Initiative
Based in Washington D.C., Learning Life is an educational nonprofit that seeks to spread learning in everyday life beyond school walls.  Learning Life’s
Citizen Diplomacy Initiative (CDI) is a new, free program that engages eligible lower-income American families, starting in Washington DC’s Ward 8, in live internet dialogues and project collaborations with similar families in other nations to nurture more informed, skilled, connected and caring global citizens in the long-term.  Here is a short video explaining the program; you can also learn more here.
